Not really sure anyone is blaming, but you have to admit most people don't leave $100k sitting in a car for this exact reason in case someone targets you, again it is the thief who is the bad guy but the victim could have avoided putting himself in this position had he made a better decision.

I know you can add a personal item policy via your insurance carrier, but the value of the items needs to be appraised. Can you get your magic cards appraised by a dealer? I'm sure it'd take a whole hell of a lot of time for bigger collections so dunno if this would be worth it. __________________ -Schmitty 82nd in Refs [297] on MOTL (1 behind weitz and Avatar of Might) 2nd in Refs [297] in OH-IO (66 behind souladvocate) 2nd in Posts [8003] in OH-IO (only 85 behind Val!) “If Brad Stevens is the future of coaching in college basketball, the sport is in a good place.” - Rick Pitino

Not completely off topic yet somewhat relevant.quote: Originally posted by ryan2754: I know you can add a personal item policy via your insurance carrier, but the value of the items needs to be appraised. Can you get your magic cards appraised by a dealer? I believe this is actually easier to do in the US than Canada. Here, I had to "schedule" the items as a rider on the insurance. It did require an appraisal and it took some time to find the right parameters the Insurance Company wanted. To make the appraisal easier I decided to have everything $20 or more appraised. The stuff under should be covered by the base $5k allowance for collectibles. The premium is quite reasonable and I am more than happy to have some peace of mind should anything happen to my collection. In the US there are private collection insurance agencies. The insurance is supposedly quite easy to get, however I have never read of anyone making a claim so who knows if they pay out. At least with a larger, reputable insurer you know that they have paid out, though there are always loopholes you need to be careful of. edit: Sucks to have a collection stolen, my condolences to the affected.

The insurance company I mentioned only ask that you specify each individual item over 5K that you want covered (you don't need the entire collection appraised). Probably a good time to mention again that I don't know if they will actually pay when a claim is made... I just went with them because of their A+ rating with the BBB and because they were referred to me by an insurance company I trust.

BC You'd think that your trunk is a SAFE place. It's takes a special kind of scumbag to break into your car and specifically target you. It's one thing if a random breaks into your car...and totally cleans you out, but being specific means that they probably planned this out well in advance. How do you protect yourself from that? The answer is...you don't.

Again....if someone is specifically targeting you how do you prevent it? I mean if they REALLY want to steal that 100k off you they are gonna pull out all the stops. What prevents them from robbing your house? Or potentially you at gun point? Do you blame America for 9/11 bc we built large buildings that were capable of being targets? Like wtf? There should be ZERO blame on this kid. He did NOTHING wrong, and some scumbag ****ed him over. Is that a hard concept to understand? It's one thing to be neglectful....but your trunk is private property. One someone intrudes on private property what more are you suppose to do? Bc if they are desperate enough to pop your trunk what makes it any less likely that they might follow you home and take matters from there?

Eli posted this on facebook a little while ago:"I have a very likely lead into exactly who broke into my vehicle, their name, and the name of the person who had them target me. This is their absolute last chance to contact me with an offer to return my cards before charges are pressed and I out them to the entire community (not to mention have them sent to jail). If they think this is a bluff they will be very sorry in 24 hours time."

I don't know about all that...if you think you have someone dead to rights, don't you just go forward with it? Why give a potential thief the opportunity to destroy evidence or fence your property by posting a warning? Seems like waiting might be a bad idea. Unless of course you don't really have any evidence and your trying to flush someone out of hiding. At any rate, sucks big time to have cards stolen--hope he can get his stuff back. This is a lesson I've repeatedly learned from this and other people--don't bring your uneeeded cards to tournies. They will annoy you to death having to babysit them, or get stolen.

that is great news but I hope he goes to the cops and presses charges before he starts naming names. The worst thing one can do is accuse the wrong person...

+1, don't negotiate and press charges. These kind of low-lives need to be punished. BTW, does anyone know what happened to the people that stole a room-full of bags from GP chicago (I think) a few years back?

Since it was stolen out of the car while not at home he may be able to get some coverage from his auto insurance (depending on the policy).

Considering he was missing at the time and most likely dead, I don't think he was bothered.

Yep, Chicago 2009, a Legacy GP. I don't know the ending to it, but I know how he caught and the way he tried to get out it. It probably belongs on a blooper reel of the dumbest thief ever. __________________ My 2008 Nationals MOTL's Pro-Tour Winner 2007-2009 Tower Magic FacebookhilikuS: Also, as much as MAB's list has become the list on the T/A Forum, I do miss Slinga's.

I heard he got caught, got out on bail, skipped bail, the end.

He just posted "Sorry guys but the detective has a promising lead and to put this out there now would ruin it. Sadly it may be days until the big reveal, so sorry for getting you all worked up but I promise it will happen."Sounds like he doesn't actually know who did it. :/

Years later, he will get stopped at the border, or by a cop or something (maybe he'll call the police because his home gets broken into and they run his name) and will get negged with breaching bail and theft. What goes around comes around.

I highly doubt any insurance will cover this, especially at such incredible values... sucks to hear for sure. Hope it's found.
