To be totally fair this will drive down the price of at least two legacy staples. Legacy players may not be the most affected by this set, but they are affected in a pretty big way.

Legacy players are the most affected. All reserved cards are spiking like mad. If you were trying to finish a deck and still need cards you are going to have to pay big. Duals are looking like power nine more and more.

This doesn't seem like blackjack to me.People already do this, though. Burn is consistent, but it does not take first at major with any frequency. I think there was 1 burn deck total in the top8's of the last 3 major modern events. According to Mtgtop8, no burn deck placed in the top8 at any major legacy event in all of 2015, and the same goes for Merfolk. Yeeeaappp. Cash cow first, availability second. Anyone inspired to jump into legacy because of this set is saving no money by getting a set of FoW for $120 instead of $240 when the increase price in duals means buying 4 of them costs more than an additional $120 than they used to. If it actually causes people to join and legacy support picks up, FoWs will likely be more than they started before EMA anyway.

Really? I should be paying attention to this. Have duals rebounded to where they were before they started losing value in the past year? __________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!I collect Granite Gargoyles. Send them my way.

What criteria are you using for major legacy/modern tournaments?

About dual prices becoming "P9", all I can say is, if you are a real MTG player who slowly spend 1-2 years from 2007-2009 accumulating 40 duals so that you can play all sorts of Legacy decks, I don't see how the price increases will affect you badly, except you getting a windfall should you decide to quit MTG entirely. It is the traders who sold/traded off duals early (like me, I got 1000+ duals in 2009 but only a small fraction of that now) that lose out.

you don't lose anything if you sold them for the same or more than you paid. Just because you sold a card at $150 and its $300 now, doesn't mean you lost money. I'm sure hoping you did something with that money between now and then any how.

Me? I said i was on Mtgtop8. So i guess i'm using Mtgtop8 definition of 'major tournament' which can probably be described as 'real life event organized by big name or WOTC itself). For example, when i mentioned 1 burn deck (including rdw, boros burn, naya burn) in all the top8's combined in the last 3 tournaments, those tournaments were Pro Tour OGW a couple weeks ago, SCG Modern Columbus, and SCG Modern Cincinnati. Or, looking back to Feb 10th of the top8's in MTGO Modern Constructed league, there are two burn (rdw) decks in all combined. quote: Originally posted by MTDetermine: About dual prices becoming "P9", all I can say is, if you are a real MTG player who slowly spend 1-2 years from 2007-2009 accumulating 40 duals so that you can play all sorts of Legacy decks, I don't see how the price increases will affect you badly, except you getting a windfall should you decide to quit MTG entirely. I don't know that everyone who wants to play Legacy got their duals in 07-09. The negative effects comes from people who perceive Legacy beocming easy to enter because of this or giving them an excuse to take the plunge. I think you lost an opportunity for money, not lost money. It is really hard to imagine feeling sorry for the people who own over a thousands duals though.

And if I had bought gold in 2008 I'd Be retired right now. 20/20 hindsight is worth what exactly?

Seriously, even then they were 30-50 bucks.... if you had 30-50k tied up in dual lands you're doing just fine. You were then and you are now.

If Wizards were to announce a new format called "Eternal", which would have officially supported WTOC and SCG events... and this format would ban all restricted list cards in addition to whatever is already banned in the existing eternal formats... I assume that would turn on its head all of the price jumping going on now. Would be kind of funny. And chaotic. Cards would spike that are not expected to be in the initial Eternal Masters set, and the Reserved List cards would crash down, probably lower than what they were pre-Eternal Masters announcement.

I think they are just trying to print cards which are too expensive to buy. You know, "its a game we want people to play" theory. The collection / value aspect is purely in the player base mind. A piece of cardboard isn't worth $1 let alone $200, it takes 2 people to bid on a $1 auction to make the price rise.
