Hello everyone,Just dropping by to remind everyone who lives on the East Cost to GTFO!!! All kidding aside, make preparations now for Irene, it is quite possible you will never again see a hurricane take this path(the last big New England hurricane was Bob in 1991 which was devastating). From South Carolina to Maine and Canada, hunker down and prepare for a seriously crappy weekend. Make sure they have a plan in place. Water, food, clothing, first aid kit, flashlight, batteries, gasoline, etc. Have scenarios such as flooding or window damage in place. Please take this seriously, Irene has the potential to be a once in a lifetime storm. Thank you, Andrew __________________ 5 out of 3 scientists agree: Greven53 is cooler than Jesus.

There was a pretty bad storm in NYC a week or two and my window started to leak. I'm not looking forward to this.

I was going to move into my dorm on saturday. Now, though, movein has been delayed until further notice If this ruins my chance to see Wyatt Cenac perform, ie if he can't reschedule for the new campus breakout date, heads will roll __________________ It is a known fact that more Americans watch the television than any other appliance.

Why gasoline? And how do you know if you're supposed to tape your windows up? Thanks, Jazaray

Thanks for the advice Greven as it is always good to be well prepared for situations like these.By the time it hits southern New England she'll be a category 2, and when she hits Mass. a category 1, and before she leaves Maine she'll be a Tropical Storm. I think Virginia & Carolinas, Maryland, DC, and New York are going to get some of the worst weather. quote: Originally posted by Jazaray: Why gasoline? There are a lot of power outages and the electric company would pretty much tell you to expect it but I suppose if you do not already have a gas generator then, well... Taping up the windows is a good idea. I'd look for any old trees that may fall on my car/house and cause damage to mine or my neighbors property and take car of that.

When Gloria rolled through in '85, we had our windows covers with plastic, which was taped. In addition to all the stuff Greven mentioned, candles might be a good idea, particularly if you're low on batteries. __________________ *Joshweek*Letter Bombs!*Facebook Me* *Logout- I had it first!*

The best advice you can give people is when you are asked to evacuate do so. And this is a good site to follow the storm at http://forums.accuweather.com/index.php?showtopic=27021&st=5970 __________________ ¯\_(ツ _/¯

My wife just told me they're already calling for evacuation in South County, RI area (according to Channel 10's Facebook post) :/
quote: WJAR NBC10 KNOW THIS: Mandatory evacuations ordered in sections of some communities: -Westerly, residents along the water in Watch Hill, Weekapaug and Misquamicut by 6PM Saturday. -South Kingstown, the evacuation effects all houses along the town's waterfront and takes effect Sunday at 8am. -Naragansett has issues a mandatory evacuation for low lying areas as of 10am Sunday. -Bristol has done the same: residents in coastal areas prone to flooding should leave by 10am Sunday.
I'm in Pawtucket (woot! home of Hasbro!) so here's hoping they don't freak out on us as well.At least the Patriots are playing in Detroit so the game isn't postponed XD __________________ Check my List! **I send in bubble mailer + top loader + soft sleeve**AtriumXP@gmail.com (e-mail/PayPal) I answer ref requests! Many camp stoves can also run on gasoline if necessary. Good luck everyone. Hope you make it through safely. We're only projected to get about 10cm of rain and 120-130km winds, which isn't all that bad, but it's plenty.

So, I've bought plenty of gatorade/water/food that doesn't need to be cooked, my roommates have all chickened out and gone to visit their parents, and I'm ready to hold down the fort. I'm in a zone b location in NYC, meaning that if Irene is still a cat 2 hurricane I may have to evacuate depending on her strength. On the flip side, public transportation is shut down at noon tomorrow (all subways and buses), bridges may close, and Amtrak and Greyhound options to where my parents live are incredibly slim so I essentially don't have a choice in the matter at this point anyway. At any rate, we're supposed to get somewhere around a foot of rain, and I'd expect the east river promenade to flood fairly heavily in some areas as a result of the rain + surge. If you're in the area, Irene will probably be no joke. Stock up, and if it gets bad, stay away from windows and if at all possible, consider staying with a friend who is in a no evac zone. Candles are an ok idea, but remember to put them out if windows break or you could have another issue on your hands - flashlights + batteries is a safer bet. Also remember to get any medicine you may need tomorrow as it will probably be your last chance before the storm hits, and if power goes out you may not be able to get more for a few days. Be careful! Edit - Just to emphasize how much it sucks that public transit/bridges will shut down, the greater NYC metropolitan area has a population of around 18 million, many of whom don't own cars, and Long Island (which is more or less only accessible through NYC) would be the 13th most populous state if it weren't a part of NY. If you're here now, be prepared to stay here unless you're forced to leave via evacuation!

On the topic of medkits, I just thought I'd post a reminder to make sure you have some sort of antiseptic with you, as well as a good pair of scissors (handy for all kinds of reasons, including cutting bandages) and a fine needle with thread. Ibuprofen is also very handy, and can go a surprisingly long way towards killing pain. And more water than you think you'll need. It's crazy how fast the water goes down. Fill up as many containers as you can with tap water, and remember that your toilet tank contains a few litres if it comes down to it. __________________ "I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each. Words of wisdom - as long as your septic system isn't backed up, of course.

Don't bother with the tape on windows. It really doesn't do anything. The winds shouldn't be bad enough to blow out windows unless you are on the coast, or maybe in that wind tunnel they call NYC.Having said that, make sure any small items are removed from porches, since they can become projectiles in a big gust. This will likely be a flooding and power outage kind of misery. If you can, make sure your gutters are clean, since 8 or 9 inches of water can find its way into your house if it can't drain quick enough. If you are in a flood prone or coastal area, move anything valuable to higher ground, since 4 to 6 feet on top of high tide can be real nasty. Inland areas will flood as well around streams, and anywhere else where water backs up. Stay away from big puddles, and look out for falling trees (the biggest wind-related problem). The soil where I am in South NJ is so saturated that I expect to see a bunch of trees go down. I don't have big ones near my house, but neighbors were cutting away all sorts of branches this morning. If things get crazy, don't go to the basement. The vast majority of hurricane fatalities aren't wind related; they are from drowning. So stay on the first or higher floor, either in a windowless room, or in a room away from the wind. Good Luck!

Well, it's already been downgraded to a Category 1 for when it hits New England tomorrow.Tropical Raindrop Irene is officially a bust, north of the Carolinas __________________ Check my List! **I send in bubble mailer + top loader + soft sleeve**AtriumXP@gmail.com (e-mail/PayPal) I answer ref requests! It hasn't really hit NYC yet, so I imagine Vermont is more or less still in the clear at this point.

Don't be so sure .... This storm is huge. The only reason it is a cat 1 is that the strong winds are spread over a huge distance (hundreds of miles), rather than some tight center. The central pressure is consistent with a much stronger storm, and we've been getting rain bands since ~ 9:30 this morning, even though the storm center isn't supposed to hit until tomorrow morning. This won't big a Big Bad Wolf storm (huffing and puffing to blow your house down), but that doesn't mean it won't be deadly or costly. I used to live in Florida, and lived through more than a few Hurricanes there, including Andrew. I'm not taking this storm for granted.

I lived in Pompano Beach for years... It's much different in FL than way up north. Nor'easters can be beasts but it's pretty rare to get much from a hurricane up here.I'm not telling anyone to take a big storm for granted; I am saying that Irene is all posture and not a legit threat. even in the Carolinas, they're touting a total of three associated deaths, one of which was a heart attack victim (how does that even get linked to a storm? Link it to the media instead, lol). __________________ Check my List! **I send in bubble mailer + top loader + soft sleeve**AtriumXP@gmail.com (e-mail/PayPal) I answer ref requests! I live down in North Kingstown, RI. As far as I've heard, there's no evacuation for us, yet. They said it's supposed to hit the worst between Sunday AM and Sunday PM. I live on the 3rd floor of an apt building, so I'm not really worried about flooding. Still not sure if I should tape up the windows, being so high up. Hey Atrium, wanna come over and have a hurricane party?
