Classic Rules
If you're not familiar with the classic game of Battleship, here's a quick synopsis (if you've ever played Battleship before, skip to below): Each player strategically and secretly places 5 ships of the following sizes horizontally or vertically (no diagonals) on a 10 x 10 grid:

Destroyer - 2 spaces
Cruiser - 3 spaces
Submarine - 3 spaces
Battleship - 4 spaces
Carrier - 5 spaces

For example, a player's board may look something like this (ships may not wrap around the edges):

Players then take turns guessing and firing upon coordinates of enemy ships. For example, one may guess E7, which in the above example would be a miss. The object of the game is to sink all enemy ships. To sink a ship, it must be struck in each space it occupies, e.g, the carrier must be hit 5 times to be sunk.

MOTL Battleship Rules
In order to prevent cheating, everyone playing will submit their board positions to me, and I will moderate the game. Obviously, that means I am not playing.

To make it a little more interesting and fast moving, as well as enabling multiple players, I have a few minor changes. First, everyone gets to fire once a day, and all shots are considered fired at once. Damage is assessed at the end of the turn. Second, players get multiple shots depending on how many ships they have. All ships are worth 1 shot, except for the carrier, which is worth 2 shots, such that everyone starts the game with 6 shots per turn.

How this will Work
Once we begin, each turn will consist of a 24 hour period. During that time, you will post your attacks here. You are not required to take a shot, so if you miss a day or fail to post, the game will still continue without you. Note that you can still be attacked. You do not need to fire all of your shots at the same person either, you may spread them around as you please. If you are so inclined, you may shoot at yourself (though I don't know what good that will do you). Post your shots in a way that's fairly easy for me to assess, such as:

At the end of each turn, I will assess the damage like so:

and then post any changes in the standings here. Since this is all public knowledge, I suggest you keep track of it as well. As players are eliminated and ships are sunk, the daily activity will decrease significantly. When it starts to get slow (usually down to 4 or 5 players), I'll modify the rules to help finish the game.

Alliances, pacts, backstabbing, ganging-up, is all acceptable and encouraged. You may post here any chatter you like, or keep it secret, doesn't matter. I will settle any disputes that arise. Sign-ups will run through Sunday night, so post here and PM me your ship positions.

One last thing: To encourage playing, I will post prizes for the following:

-Last man standing
-Most sinks
-Most player eliminations

Finally, remember that this is a game. Don't take it too personally.

Hmmm, that could be awkward if you are trying to team up with somebody as you could never trust them (well for the most part). I would think they would need to be public, so at least you could retaliate if someone/team tried to team up on you. Though I've never played with more than 2 people, in 2 player games you always call out your shots.
