Topic: Best option for storing high value cards

I am looking for advice on the best option for storing mtg cards. I currently have cards valued $50-$200 in 200count plastic card containers. All cards valued over $200 are in top load individual cases. Is this optimal for storing cards for over a year? If not what is? Would a thicker screw case be overkill for my beta lotus? Also - does anyone have a plastic lidded bin they would recommend? Thanks in advance for any advice - if anyone is particularly helpful I will reward them with something worthwhile.

I keep all my high value stuff in binder pages when I'm not playing with them. For the really expensive stuff I sleeve them, and then put them in the binders.I tried doing the screw cases at one point, but actually damaged one of my cards when unscrewing to use in a vintage event. So I got rid of those cases. My philosophy is the less actual contact you have with money the card, the better. Thus the sleeve-within-a binder sleeve. I don't remember the brand name, but I recommend specialty binder pages with extra strong backing (they are white). If you are looking at a long term storage solution because you aren't planning on playing, a temperature controlled insured safety deposit box in a bank is also fine. If I ever quit magic and don't sell out, that's where my money cards are headed.

I think sleeves/toploaders are fine in terms of what to put the cards themselves into. The real threats related to long-term storage are environmental (humidity, water, temp) and FIRE.Put cards in sleeves/toploaders, then put money cards into good quality waterproof ziplock bags, pressing out all air. Put ziplock bags into fireproof case (~$50 at Staples) and put said case into a dark, dry, high closet shelf. Cost is minimal and cards will be well preserved/protected.

The best way I found for storing my collection for anything over $100 or $200 (or just hard to find items) that I won't be playing with anytime soon is:Step I. Double Sleeve the cards ("seals" the card, prevents moisture and dirt getting into the card) - 1.: put the cards upside down in a KMC perfect fit sleeve. (bottom of the card would be at the top of the open part of the sleeve) - 2: put the card rightside up in a regular KMC sleeve (or dragon shield, ultra pro: all of these fit the perfect fits fine). Step II. Put the double-sleeved cards either in padded deck box or toploaders. - A. Deck Boxes I recommend are the ION deckboxes with mana symbol or the new Ultra Pro ones with the mana symbol, mainly since the inside is cloth. - B. I sometimes put the $1000+ sleeved cards in toploaders but they tend to be a pain to remove from the toploader so I've stopped doing this. Put toploaders in cardboard box. Step III. Put the deckboxes/cardboard boxes in safety deposit box at your local bank. Most banks charge a fee for the safety deposit boxes (some give it away for free if you carry a large balance at the bank). Totally worth the peace of mind from thefts, fires, and whatnots at your residence. Plus renters/homeowners insurance is a pain to deal with and you WILL NOT get 100% of your value back if you have to do a claim. Expect at the MOST 90% after some legwork. Feel free to PM me for more details. I have an extensive collection and I've dealt with thefts, fires, and water leaks at my place before so I'm now super paranoid. :P

Using perfect fits and normal sleeves will also eliminate some of the cards exposure to humidity and other weather elements. -Cheers-

From what I heard during my sports cards collecting days, those thick screw in cases are bad for the cards because if you screw the case really tight and leave there for a long while, the card would stick to the plastic.

Only if the card is naked against the screwdown. Just have a penny sleeve and don't screw too tightly for screwdowns.

I have these kinda cards in a single sleeve in a deck box if its being used or in the same sleeve in one of those long white boxes randomly mixed in with other trash cards. Its always fun when someone looks through one of those boxes and gets to see: random edh foil, standard common, beta time vault, more edh foils, ... then you get the, "wait, what was that?!"

Keep them in a box with some of those silica packs, or make yourself a dessicator. That way, you won't get the bending.-Matt

meh, I just pack them so tight in a box they can't bend. Then again, I tend to carry boxes of said stuff around in my backpack cause you never know when you need it for something.

is it sad that I'm a working adult and the item in my house with the highest value is a 500 count cardboard box full of magic cards that I store in a backpack?

Seems pretty common actually if you own a house and play magic. I just bought a house not too long ago so kinda the same case for me. I haven't added up my collection since before legacy prices took off but I'm sure I have over $10k in value now.
