How in the heck does this get graded a 10?!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-MAGIC-BETA-GMTG-GEM-MINT-PSA-10-VOLCANIC-ISLAND-/310630302821?pt=Trading_Card_Games_US&hash=item4853024465

The centering is way off and if you zoom there are a bunch of little white nicks around the edges. Maybe some are on the case, but not all. Is PSA that much worse than BGS or does Daniel Chang have an inside man?

To make this a T&V appropriate thread, what would a beta volc in this condition (NM, not a 10) actually be worth if it wasn't for Danny's tricks?

first and foremost, the beta volc there is really really nice..

psa doesnt care on centering much.. the lil white nicks? I only see a couple.. the case shows a bunch of smudges/cracks/chips, whatever.. and yes, psa is just that bad

to be fair, that's about what psa 10 looks like.. the card would be a bgs 9 more than likely due to an 8.5 on centering

I agree the PSA 10 is the correct grade, might be a 9 but as coolio said, centering isnt nearly as important to PSA

There is a youtube video were he breifly discusses where he sends cards(PSA vs BGS) based on centering and other aspects. Looks like he made the right call on that one

GEM Mint 10 for this card is disgraceful. It's very nice but GEM Mint 10 is for PERFECT which this card clearly is not. PSA gets it's deserved reputation for gradings like this one.

As for PSA centering, I agree centering does not seem to be important. Having said that, none of my few PSA's have any nicks along the edges. Zero! Most of my graded cards are BGS 9.5. I can tell you now that some (about 4) of my BGS cards show at least 8-10 obvious nicks each along the edges. They received scores of 9.5. The other BGS cards are free of nicks.

I heard from a trusted source that someone sent in around 40 PSA 10s to BGS for conversion and only 2 converted to BGS 9.5

I've heard other similar stories. Part of that is obviously centering, but BGS just seems more consistent/strict.

I've seen bad grades from both companies and many stories of resubmitting and getting a different grade, so always look at the card not just the grades.

BGS for me though PSA 10 prices are way overblown IMO.

I've gotten 8's back from them that looked better than that. This is a good example of a solid 9, and probably also an example of "resubmit till you get what you want" (the joke is PSA stands for "Please Submit Again"). As said above, I've seen bad grades from all the grading houses. It's unfortunate, but it's a fact of life.

There have long been allegations (problems) with PSA grading. Consistency is one problem. The idea that you can resubmit and get a different (better) grade is problematic at best.

And there have always been allegations that bulk users of PSA services get better grades than the single user. I have encountered cards that seemed grossly over-graded, and they always seemed to have gotten graded by some large seller of graded cards. And this isn't something new; similar allegations have plagued PSA since it first began grading sports cards.

PSA does look at centering, but Magic cards have always been more tightly centered than sports cards, so PSA's standards aren't as relevant. I think PSA requires only a 55/45 centering for higher grades, and that would be considered off-centered as a Magic card.

This has been the case since Baseball cards.

PSA 10 was always considered lower the a BGS 9.5. A little higher then a BGS 9 but not always. PSA 9 is a BGS 8.5 is not less.
