what is your opinion ...

can a PLAYED CARD (with sleeves) be described as NM if the card reveals "surface damage" due to the card-sleeve interraction ??
(the edges being real NM, no edge damage)

what I call "suface damage" is basically the dust being stuck in between the card & sleeve ... having the card become "matt"

IMO, it depends on to the extent of it. On foils, I feel it lessens the value of them.

No it cannot. It's LP if it has surface damage http://www.blackborder.com/cgi-bin/customscripts/help/condition.cgi

If there is a lot of light scratches, yes it's lp.

If it's very little and the card is basically shiny, i will call it nm. Because it is not mint but NEAR mint.

I would say that is SP. NM to me is virtually flawless.

Using natural light should make it easy to determine NM. NM is virtually flawless. A very minor (and I mean small nick or minor scratch may move to NM-, but more than that it is SP).

I've been sent cards that people say are NM, and they are LP (EX) as you can see finger grease, light scratches, and surface damage. Even played in a sleeve and shuffling, a card can easily go from NM to LP, given enough time and people touching the damn cards with their pizza greased fingers and you don't see it always under flourescent lighting.

thanks for the answers ... it is exactly what I was thinking... and it IS the way I DO grade cards ...

but as I bought a card which was listed NM and received a card with surface damage I wanted to be sure before asking the guy about it ...

PS : yes, I'm talking about a foil card ... No, it's not shiny anymore where there is surface damage

I've seen plenty of foils that show play-wear on the surface but the card edges are NM. Some people will grade this NM, personally I wouldn't.

Foils being cloudy but no other surface wear or damage to edges could also be either NM or LP depending on the seller and the actual card itself.

Ya that's a tough line, honestly. Sometimes if the cloudy is excessive I certainly take it down to SP, but otherwise it's NM if it's just slight.
