Maybe look into a set of mana-symbol "smilies" for people to post with. Something like :white: or :zero: would get translated into a little white mana and 0-cc gifs (pngs?) respectively. I implemented this over at 5-Color.com's forums amny moons ago. Here's a page that shows them in action.

Those symbols (including the tap symbol) are copyright Wizards of the Coast. We could not use them here unless we got permission from them. It would be nice, however, I doubt that it would be so easy to get permission. __________________ If you see a rules violation, PM me a link and I will take care of it. Thanks. It can't be impossible - MTGS and MTGN both use them. __________________ g9 all up ons

But do you know if they have permission? Magic Suitcase was given a cease and desist order by WotC in part because of their use of the mana symbols on the site. Just because sites are using them doesn't mean they're doing so legally. __________________ Help Leshrac out, Donate to MOTL Stack 3!Please report posting violations! You are correct. In fact, many "apprentice-like" programs get shut down for this very reason (one such program being MTGPlay). __________________ --------------I Am On My Own-------------- ... «·´`·.(*·.¸(`·.¸ ¸.·´)¸.·*).·´`·» ... «·´¨*·.¸¸.* I Rule the World *.¸¸.·*¨`·» ... «·´`·.(¸.·´(¸.·* *·.¸)`·.¸).·´`·» ... I would assume that yes, they do have permission, as several WotC employees frequent the board and it has yet to be shut down. But I don't know for sure. __________________ g9 all up ons

Make your own symbols then...like a white circle with a W, a Blue circle with a U, a Black circle with a B, a red circle with a R, and a green circle with a G... As for the numbers just use a different shade of brown for the circle and a different font for the number... They wouldn't be used for profit and would be inherantly different, so it's not going to be a problem. I'll even make them up all nice in Photoshop... Or better yet why don't you just get permission from Wizards? I'm sure if you sent them a letter asking to use them on a website dedicated to the discussion of their game and not for profit they wouldn't mind at all.__________________ "Between tantilizing rhythm and wildly feverish dreams gleam tendrils of lusty summer desire entwined not only with dark night fantasy but sweet escape to a blossoming morning sun"

I asked WotC and got a big fat "No". Copyrights, must be protected, intellectual property, blah blah blah. I wonder what these guys do?__________________ BoltBait inspired! [Wants] [Prices] [Cards] [5-Color] [home]

Wouldn't it be considered under "Fair Use"? As long as you put " blah blag blah are copyblah by blah of the blah blah"

Quite possibly, as that's what mtgnews.com seems to be doing, they are using them for the purpose of reporting, and they have a huge statement saying that all those set names and game names and the symbols are copyrights owned by WotC... quote: Originally posted by US Copyright Law: § 107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use38Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include — (1) the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes; (2) the nature of the copyrighted work; (3) the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and (4) the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work. The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.
So ridiculously vague... This might help too... __________________ "Between tantilizing rhythm and wildly feverish dreams gleam tendrils of lusty summer desire entwined not only with dark night fantasy but sweet escape to a blossoming morning sun" <Buy my cards!>

The problem is, whether or not it's actually legal, WotC is pursuing legal options against some sites that do use the symbols. Although I think it would be nice to have them and it's quite possible that it falls under fair use, the fact is, the cost of providing a legal defense is just too expensive. Unless Leshrac does get explicit permission from WotC, it's just not worth the risk.__________________ Help Leshrac out, Donate to MOTL Stack 3!Please report posting violations!
