I'm sure there has, but has anyone ever approached the idea of some sort of yearly paid membership? I'm a member of another popular forum that dwarfs even this one (pbnation.com) and they have a feature like that.

Paid membership would allow you maybe into supporting members only area, along with maybe upgraded search features and the like.

Something like that would help pay for upkeep of the site I'd imagine, even with the work needed to upgrade and support new features. Paid membership would also help new traders as people would see they they have every intention of being around since they paid for membership. People could be more willing to simul send or come to some compromise on sending order, which can be a pain at first when you're always sending first. I would personally take it into some consideration if I saw it.

Another feature that caught my eye were "Gold Up's." Having only so many given to you with membership, and then having to purchase others if desired, they keep that "Up" at the top of the page for a set amount of time, normally around three days to a week, be it your own page or someone else's for whatever reason. Having many "Gold Up's" on a page could become overflowing, but that could also encourage traders to go farther that just the first or second page in when browsing the trading forums.

I'm not sure about the practical application of these ideas but given the popularity of the site I'd imagine more than a few would invest in such an idea.

Just a thought.

Depending on the membership fee, I wouldn't mind pitching in to help the site.

I don't like the Gold Ups though

I know some of us did send in cards for selling for site upkeep, whatever happened to that.

MOTL Stack is where people can let nderdog know they want to send stuff in as much or as little as they like, completely voluntarily, and the cards would be sent to Leshrac where they would be sold to help fund the site. IIRC Leshrac accepts donations of money or cards, and you always can buy an MOTL T-shirt in support of the site. I don't believe Leshrac ever intended to give this site reservations for premium members since there are people of all ages, nationality, financial status, etc, where being a premium member you'd have to make a regular donation to keep your status.

It might be a good thing to have a premium section for paying members who have been here for a while but to give special posting perks to them vs. the new guy that just wants to make a few simple trades gets ignored as his list gets pushed to the bottom. The only way I'd see how it would work is if there was an active buy/sale list on MOTL, a premium articles section where notable Magic players from around the world would be paid to submit their works, a staff of technicians who'd be working and building on the site's backbone, and a full crew of Mods of whom you'd be able to contact around the clock to help assist you. With that I'm sure those people would all want to get paid but the Mods here are taking time out of their real life to do this for free. Who knows, traffic here may or may not increase but with a membership fee you want to make sure those people will want to donate to get what they ask for and to keep coming back and donate on a consistent regular basis. There's plenty of other sites that give just the bare minimum but if you pay a membership fee or send in a timed donation then you get all kinds of other stuff and I don't think Leshrac wants to copy what has been done before.

Oh, look! I suggested the same thing on March 20th... 2001.

http://classic.magictraders.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/000252.html

Read it and read Leshrac's reaction.

I noticed in that thread that the Auction overhaul has been in the works for six years now. It better blow my socks off when it comes around.

Gold ups are a bad idea. I posted at PbNation since Feb of 2002, and it has really only gone downhill from there. That place is complete jank now. Gold ups or paid ups completely clog the first few pages of a forum, which is utterly annoying. Also, i've heard it puts more strain on the server, but i dont know how much water that argument holds.
