Layoffs were announced today. Thankfully, I wasn't on the list, so I get to keep my job for now.

I was going 85 down the highway today with a cop tailgating ME the whole time. I moved and he sped down the road at like 100, no lights on.

I swear they're above the law.

Whoa, you dewds won't believe this. I just met--not saw--met Robin Williams at the card store. The only store in SF with sanctioned tournaments and Robin Williams was there today. Whooo

We talked for a couple minutes about how old people should be like us and visit card and comic stores more often.

Today is a good day.

Edit - For reference, Robin Williams lives in Seacliff, which is a wealthy neighborhood in San Francisco and is only a few blocks from this store.

Yeah, he is. It's kind of funny how celebrities dress when they go out. He had a 5 o'clock shadow that could scare children and was wearing an orange raincoat with khakis. He's so

I also went and saw a play two months ago with him in it. (A live play btw)

It seems a huge effort to go from depth 16 to 17. And I intuitively believe that the effort required to go one step beyond will grow exponentially (at least).

D=16 required a much larger effort than D=17 actually... because I was looking in the wrong place (3p+/-531440). Since I generated 3 D=17 and 4 D=16 trees in the first 100 million tests on 2p+/-4095 I feel pretty good about my chances of finding a tree of D=18 in the first billion tests which should take about 5 days or so.

For D>18 I may have a few tricks up my sleeve yet. There are always exceptions out there waiting to be found, such as 2p+/-15 at 13 which has a very respectable depth of 15 but an amazing population of 71. Nothing has come close but 2p+/-15 at 13 and 2p+/-4095 at 3821 both share a very interesting property: some of the children are LESS than the starting prime. For example: 2p+/-15 at 13, 2x13-15 = 11 which is prime and less than 13. 2x11-15 in turn = 7 which is also prime. So 2p+/-15 at 13 is like grafting 3 trees together, and therefore it is no suprise that it is so darn big. By playing around with this idea, it might be possible to cause a larger tree to be formed without having to go tearing off into the billions with weeks of overnight computations.

Technically, it's quite possible to create an INFINITE tree, such as 2p+/-3 at 3. 2x3 - 3 is 3 and 3 is prime so put it in the tree... ad infinitum. I've excluded infinite trees of this type, but there may be other types of inifinite trees that may arise when exploring trees which generate offspring which are less than the root. What if n x a - o = b and n x b + o = a and both a and b are prime, for example? Is this possible?

Anyway, I'm not interested in infinite trees at this time.

Originally posted by Erl00:

Well we know that the number of primes is infinite. There's nothing magic about the number 22, there is no reason to believe that if an arithmetic progression of length 22 exists, then one of 23 can't exist. Further an arithmetic progression can be expressed as a prime tree (unfortunately infinite) where the coefficient is 1--1p+o, where o is the interval of the progression.

Secondly since an arithmetic progression requires that for each prime there can only be ONE child, but a prime tree allows for TWO, my chances of finding a prime tree of D=23 are FAR better than my chances of finding a progression of length 23.

I have no doubt that such trees exist, heck there are probably trees out there that can run for hundreds of generations. The only problem is that such trees are likely expressed as 294612834692386192384791238461286p+/-872133285946243756987093623287409489253 at 987423974928729387129387198357 and therefore finding them is the hard part.

The short answer is no, there's no theory proving it possible. One can probably do a proof and I suspect a proof would indicate that it is VERY possible. I'm not equipped to do such a proof.

Will I give up? Maybe. Maybe I'll move on to some other interest, or a different problem in math. In the meantime, though, it's pretty easy to run computations overnight and check the results in the morning, so I have no immediate plans to stop trying.

EDIT: Thanks for the congratulations, BTW!!!

A friend of mine did bad on a test today. I laughed and screamed, "Boy did you get raped." While I sat there and chuckled to myself for a little bit, the whole class pretty much turned and looked at me. The only person who didn't tell me I was awesome was my prof, who kicked me out of class.

Other than having babies with evans, I have never been more proud.
