Yes, Carrion Ants and Killer Bees were HUGE with us too! Shivan Dragon and Royal Assassin were as well. One of my 1st Black decks consisted of 1x Royal Assassin, 1x Sorceress Queen and 1x Will-O'-the-Wisp. When Alliances came out I added Ishan Shade and Veldrane of Sengir to the deck. And Lake of the Dead. A "combo" I used to run in it involved Norrit and Sengir Vampire or Norrit and Royal Assassin (also teamed nicely with and Icy Manipulator!) Was good times!~MM __________________ I am MeddlingMage...YOUR Motl Survivor 11 Champion, 2007 Captain N award winner, 2010 Marlboro award winner, and 2011 Champion Tournament Pick'em MOTL NCAA Bracket Challenge winner!CM Punk "OMG Kevin Nash WTF, thought he was dead, LOL" New keeper of the Logout button

I played Circle of Protections in every deck, I thought Vizzerdrix and Trained Orgg were amazing, and my buddy convinced me that Fallen Empires was the best set ever with the Thrulls. Our casual games always enforced the Awakening and Aluren rules for the game. It was sweet! Oh yeah...................and B.F.M was ALWAYS in my opponents deck, and I hated it............until I got my COP: Black out.

When I first learned to play Magic during my senior year in high school (around 1999), I remember being absolutely amazed with Thallid: it's upkeep ability of adding a counter it so you could eventually make tokens -- the thing was, that I thought I could activate the add a counter ability infinite times to win the game. This was so thrilling to me that I ended up paying around $1.00 each for 4 thallids as I loved my red and green deck as a new player. Needless to say, when I posted this story on mtgsalvation.com for the worst magic new player mistakes one can remember, it ended up winning me 4 booster packs of Future Sight, which included a foil Akroma's Memorial + Horizon canopy for the rares. Well, I guess sometimes it pays quite handsomely to be an absolute moron

I used to think I was the **** for beating people with pure cheese decks and wonder why no one would play me. With the local level of play, it was hard to beat a direct damage deck at the time. Always, Bolt, Bolt, Shock, Shock, Incinerate, Fireball. Man, I was on top!I also always used to trade awesome rares to get another booster pack. I'd crack open a pack, pull a WoG, and trade it right away only to get a ****ty rare.

I remember creatures with flying were allowed to attack any creature directly instead of a player, making Sengir Bats from Homelands extremely powerful. I remember buying some alliances and trading away force of wills for omen of fire.

I started playing during Urza's and Masques standard. Looking back, I was extremely lucky at packing good cards. I remember specifically trading a Masticore for a colossus of sardia and a common from fallen empires. Then I packed a Squee and traded it for a playset of Ice Age Counterspells...When I quit the first time I sold my collection to the LGS for $160: this was in '05, 4 beta sink holes, 4 vindicate, 4 beta scrublands, 4 savannah, 4 windswept heath, 4 orim's chant, 2 the abyss, 4 isochron scepter, 4 wrath of god, 4 isochron scepter, 2 masticore made up a deck or two, plus my rare binder, and my box of common/uncommons.... I started play 6 years later and I'm just saddened by the fact that I needed gas money back in 05

I remember the first pack I ever opened...Unlimited. I can't remember the rare, but I know I was excited to get a Llanowar Elf in the pack. My friend was who got me into the game and he already had a lot of cards. I knew some of them... ie Sengir Vampire, Serra Angel, Craw Wurm, Shivan Dragon...you know the big fatties everyone used to love. I loved Elves and was thrilled to get one in my pack that cost me $2.50. I remember for about 2 weeks straight I wouldnt eat at school and save my lunch money until I got home and would buy packs of Magic. Eventually my mother figured this out.....then I would just ask my Gram for lunch money as well . Turns out after my mother forgot about a month later I started buying 2 packs of cards per day!

My 1st pack was Revised. My rare was Volcanic Island. Later I traded it to someone for a bunch of "good" red/green cards. Chub Toad, Marton Stromgald are all I remember. :/ ~MM

Even in 2005 that was a terrible sale. Unless you mean $1600?

If it makes you feel better the first Tournament Deck I ever opened I got a Vesuvan Doppleganger, Volcanic Island, Sol Ring and Demonic Tutor. Then I traded the Volcanic Island for another 2 Sol Ring and 3 Craw Wurm, and I felt like I was ripping the kid off.... Until about a month later when I looked at InQuest for the first time Volcanic Island....$11, 2xSol Ring $3 each 3 Craw Wurm.... $.15 each Gotta love mono-Green with 4 Sol Ring's back in the day.

Tom just reminded me of some more!We didn't realize that Dragon Engine's counter's were only "until EOT", and counter spell SUCKED, cause it put the card back in your hand and you could just recast it next turn. We also had a house rule that if you go to 50 life, you won, because we were sure there was no way for the rest of us to get rid of THAT MUCH life. That was, until we all started building decks meant to get to 50 life. heh. We used to think Urza's Mine/Tower/Power Plant produced mana of any desired color. Good times!

Sat next to a Girl who passed a foil snapcaster Mage to the guy on her right. He proceeded to rub it into her face about how dumb she was for 10min. I took 1 min to put him in his place... (sure be excited, but don't make someone cry because they don't know the value of the cards and want to take break and have fun for a couple of hours)

Depressingly, that type of behaviour is more common than it should. Then you wonder why girls don't play magic. __________________ #2 in posts from British Columbia!Got any Portuguese Foils? Post on my list or email me at valter.cid@gmail.com !

My friends and I were taught that you could use colorless mana to pay for any color mana cost, the urza lands were so good! hahaAlso I remember before I ever started playing in tournaments and getting experience that I would trade away onslaught fetches like crazy because why would you pay 1 life to go get a mountain when you could just play a regular mountain for free?

Man, some people are socially retarded. We use to have a few hot girls hang out at the shop, but some people dont know how to act right in public and ruin it for everyone. Making rude comments, or saying awkward comments making girls feel uncomfortable, isnt good for the game, and just lives up to the stereotype that nerds have. In the end, it sets gamers back like 15 years of progress

Excuse you? I know quite a few girls who play Magic. Including myself. Not good to make such broad generalizations. Especially when you KNOW one of the mods is female AND plays Magic. Love you Mr. C Thanks, Jazaray

Our group is really good about keeping that kind of stupidity away. Just a couple weeks ago, we had a guy show up acting like a particularly big jerk (it was interesting listening to him brag about how great his deck was like he masterminded it, when it was MY deck that I loaned him before I knew he'd be a total dick) who was told by several players to be nice, so before the next week, we all made arrangements for any good decks to be "loaned out" so he wouldn't be able to play unless he built his own deck. Luckily he hasn't shown up again since. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. Trade them to me, please! Report rules violations.
