This exactly is why I came up with the number I did on the first page. For every person with a $5k collection there's probably 100 with a $50 collection. I was running on the assumption that he wanted active players and such, where there's a ton of casual people that built their collection from buying packs and stuff. I had some people on eBay buy my boxes of bulk for $60 to get into playing Magic for fun. I guess that does make their collection worth about $50-60 just from the size of it, but certainly not much more. If we're also looking at inactives, there's probably a TON more people with $50 collections than there are with $10k hidden alpha/beta collections.

Here is one of my all foil decks:
I'd hate to calculate what my collection is worth. I have a full play set of NM Revised duals, lots of sets, and these...

That bolt needs to be played! I have a set of Russian foil juggernauts if you want to upgrade.

Think my dragon collection is worth almost $2,000...guessing other stuff is around 10-12k range. Sickens me to think how much I have spent on things.

I am thinking the bolt is Mr Bait's namesake. Thus the red deck from hell he hath shown. Just curious how much a summer bolt goes for these days (not that I own one). Summer magic is one of the few things I have never acquired and have had my chance at Worlds 2004 and 2011 to get a card or 2. My collection is well above the average (no bragging, just a 18 year passion). Love the art and casual play with friends with cubes and EDH these days.

this whole question really makes me wonder what the average value is for an entire collection of singles at a major retailer like trollandtoad or star city games. while i work as a magic dealer and have probably close to 120-150 dual lands and most standard staples, i was only able to appraise my collection on brainburst.com's estimator to be around $50,000 retail (probably about $30k-$35k MOTL pricing) without commons or uncommons, factoring in that I have about 25,000 bulk rares and foils at about $0.20 each. i really have only played magic regularly since 2001 and learned the end of my senior year in high school in early 2000, so I do not have much in the way of beta cards, etc... (Blacksburg is actually a very small town and we mostly have standard players that bail out of their cards once they graduate college). At this point, I really wish I had collected Magic instead of hard-to-find popular Nintendo, SNES, and Genesis games in the mid 1990's for a hobby, but it was all I had as an army brat that moved constantly from town to town without any knowledge of events off the military bases.Fortunately, as a dealer, I can say I really have not dumped most of my savings into my collection to get the store started. I often get most of the value from trading cards at major events with other people there (including MOTL members) the pretense upfront that i am a dealer for a small town magic store and I give everyone a business card that I trade with. The only hard parts to factor would likely be the 250,000 bulk commons // uncommons I own (about 15,000 are nice things like Brainstorms, Dark Rituals, R.E.B.'s etc...) and foreign cards: foreign singles rarely sell locally, even priced the same as english versions, as locals want cards they can read and they often will get rid of these cheap or for english versions, despite foreign cards being wildly popular on MOTL and at major events

LOL...Tim knows well... This year I want to finish at least three more sets...Fallen Empires (1 cards missing), Alliances (3 cards missing with 2 cards pending) and Revised (20 cards missing with 8 cards pending) are hot contenders but not the only ones where I could score. One of the reasons I roam the various forums (and MOTL as my favorite) __________________ Collecting signed cards. PM me...Total signed cards: >29'000 my stuff my nearly complete signed sets

Based on the dollar amount of most of the collections I have purchased I would say the average person only holds a few hundred dollars in Magic. Of course you get the occasional person selling a collection in excess of $5k but around here that is few and far between.Back in the day I used to have a collection that comprised of full set of Beta P9, set of Beta Duals, 100+ Revised Duals, 2 Full Sets of Unlimited, AN, AQ, LG, blah, blah, blah but I have since moved on. I think the only thing I own now is a Beta Volcanic Island which I got for $100. Most impressive collection/inventory aside from big names like SCG, T&T would be that dude who was at Gen Con a few years back with 100's of P9, multiples of every Beta card and the like. Locally I wouldn't be surprised if the dealers around here had 100k tied up in singles.

I will say a dealer focused on Legacy/Modern/EDH should have 50k in stock as dealers will often try to keep at least 8 copies of each card. There will be variations to the 50k, More if you keep higher inventory to offset inefficiencies in your operation More if you try to provide a wider range More if you try to touch the foil market as well I estimate you can be a T2 dealer on 10k or even less. Reason is that T2 turnover must be fast, if not, your cards will have depreciate and you will be closing down soon. With a fast turnover, you always has incoming cash to fuel new purchases. So doing T2 on 10k should be fine. With MTG cards exceeding value of gold in terms of weight, I think carrying 100s of P9 around is a bad idea from a security point of view. I keep stuff like P9 at home. People who really want to buy P9/ABU/LG/AN stuff will bother to find out who are the ones with the supply and they will contact you.

Oh, I have yet to been to 1 GP. Biggest event I went to was Pre-Release and the last I went to was in 2010 if I am not wrong. It also depends on what you play. My customers mostly play Legacy. So their collection will be easily $1000, more likely $2000-3000. Factor in some appreciation, and you are looking at $3000-4000 easily. For pure T2 players, a $1000 collection is already not a small figure as their cards depreciate very quickly.
