What do you guys think is the average value of a MTG collection for a typical player? Collector? Dealer? I used to think that people with a collection worth $100k or more were pretty rare. But now I get the feeling that there are hundreds of people with a collection of that worth which makes my 5k collection peanuts (which I still appreciate). Since we're on the topic, what's the most interesting/extensive/expensive collections you guys have ever seen? For starters, Starcitygame's display cases at events are pretty crazy. I wouldn't be suprised if that is only like 10% of what they have.

Well a 5k collection probably average, I'm far far far from a dealer but when I work hard on trading I usually move through collections that size on a fairly regular basis...50k-100k collections do seem more abundant..think this is mostly due to the price of cards going up up up....lots of 10k-15k collections quickly tripled or more in price over the last 2-5 years... Think my favorite is the guy with 500+ FoW's, and 100 count stacks of Duals....but that just me __________________ I shall have the souls of all who defy me. "Lord Crovax"

My collection is right around $18k... The most impressive collection I've seen was a playset of every set (not counting duel decks and such) he also had completed foil sets for each one thats been released in foil.

Probably 1k or so for players? There's likely a bunch of people with near-worthless collections because they don't play too competitively enough to build the really costly decks, and probably just as many people that only have the money to build one, maybe two of the costly decks. They'll balance out the people that have like $10k in cards. Collectors and dealers will have higher average value. My personal collection is worth probably a few hundred bucks max (it was worth more, but most of that value was tied up in collection stuff like artist proofs and what not), it's my trade/sale stuff that's worth more.

I've come to realization that most Magic players are carrying a solid amount of coin regardless of what they play. Having one deck from any format, even EDH, is going to cost a good amount of money. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the average collection of any serious Magic player was in the range of four figures. I don't have any decks built but the contents of the binders I carry around is in the 6-8K range. __________________ Most References in Massachusetts 80th All-timeSupport my friend's store: http://www.tabletoparena.com My blog: http://wings0298.blogspot.com

Mine after selling nearly 5k worth of stuff is probably still in the 2-3k range... __________________ I shall have the souls of all who defy me. "Lord Crovax"

Probably around 1-2k for a guy who plays mostly T2. But if he play Legacy, you can get to 5k before you even know it. For Modern, I will guess a guy needs at least 2k of cards to have a feet in the doorstep. On EDH, EDH used to be a cheap format with most cards at $1-2. But that was so long ago. Nowadays, most non-lands EDH cards are easily $5, $10, $15-20. With some fetches, it is $500 easily. Add in Shocklands/Duals, you are at $1000 before you even know it. 10 Fetches = $170 easily. 10 Duals = $500 easily. 10 Shocklands = $180 easily. You get the idea.

My (unpowered) cube alone must put me over 1K - one of each of the original dual lands from Unlimited, one of each of the 10 fetch lands, 10 Ravnica block dual lands, about 150 Unglued basics for deck construction, plus a bunch of good cards from each color and all five Swords, etc.I have a playset of most of the relevant cards for Standard, three EDH/Commander decks, and a bunch of cards that are just stored in boxes/binders, including a pile of Legacy/Modern cards like Tarmogoyfs, Japanese Onslaught fetchlands, etc. At one point, I had two sets of P9, but I sold them off since Vintage died and I had things like gas, food, and tuition to pay for.

Meh, I don't feel like adding it up. Not sure that I would ever want to. It would just make me want the cash at some point. I know around here I've bought out people's whole collection for ~$200-500. Mine goes a tad above that... ~18x ea guru, beta duals (4x sea, 2x trop, 1x rest), then we get into my foil habit... it just seems excessive, but I can't let myself think that or else I might stop buying foils, hah.

I would guess that the average collection is like $3k for a competitive player. Most have at least 2 decks available plus trade stock. Mine on the other hand....maybe 5-6k.Trag3dy

I think it just depends on the metagame. Around here, I have a higher end collection, but it's probably worth about 2k. There's a lot of new players here that are still learning the value of a Snapcaster. Most of the players here are inherited collections filled with Modern. Occasionally, someone says they're getting back into the game and they may have around 1k in older stuff and no Standard.

Years ago I had well over $10k in cards. Mostly Vintage(P9, Alpha Sinkholes, Oddities) and what would now be Legacy staples(ie Duals, FOWs, etc) that I sold off for good prices at the time but are worth far far more today. I bought a car and helped pay for books/tuition. I've never regretted it bc that car I bought was of far more importance than the Magic cards. Hell, even if I had those cards today that car still made me more money in the long run than the appreciation of those cards would have. Now, probably close to $1k-$1500 in physical value with about $1k online worth. Carrying around thousands of $ worth of cards was never my thing either...people are crazy for doing that.

I have ~$1500 in one deck alone. I probably have ~$3000 in the decks I have built and carry around with me, and then anywhere from a few hundred to nearly $1k worth in trade stock, depending on how im doing that day.__________________ send ref checks, paypal payment or any questions to the email in my profile! $200 liquid for the average magic player.Book value (even looking at Ebay averages) it is always more but the value of most collections isn't as high as people think. __________________ Member Since 03/28/2001 11000+ posts 1st in posts in Ontario 13th in posts on MOTL Top 5 in Refs in Ontario (by people who location posted)

A lot of newer players would bring down the average quite a bit. If you were to pick an average player, defined as one who has played mtg for a few years at least, that might average out to around 2k. My collection is around 8-10k. __________________ |My Angels~My P9 l""|"\__, |~~My #1 Angel~~l'_|'_|_|) |(@)(@)""***|(@)(@)**|(@)

Ever seen my Goblins deck for Legacy? I've also started "upgrading" some FNM promos (Ringleader, Warchief) to pack foils which just about doubles the individual card's value. __________________ send ref checks, paypal payment or any questions to the email in my profile! Best collection I saw was inherited by someone. He contacted me out of the blue to start with saying he needed someone with expertise to evaluate the collection. I drove over and was just amazed. His sister had owned a shop in California and started in the Beta Days. Had a complete BETA and Unlimited set and then tons of extras. Three sets of Power, 80-100 Berserks, Sinkholes, serra angels, swords to plowshares all BETA and in Mint condition. I tried to buy the collection, but unfortunately the guy who had inherited it was an Engineer. If you have never tried to buy a collection from an Engineer, it is a whole different animal. Never in a hurry, I offered 8, then 10, and then 12, 15k for the collection (this was 8 years ago) and he didn't even blink or make any counteroffers. He had looked up all the stores he could piece the thing out to and sell it off at the highest buy prices. He had a spreadsheet of every single card and their prices even for bulk...

I sold about $5k in crap a couple years ago, but still have a decent amount. My main Legacy deck is about $6500 by the MOTL guide, and I've got about $3600 invested in my stupid Zombie Masters. Add in complete sets, random beta duals and power, and I'm probably in the $15-20k range. I'm more collector than player these days though, so for a collector, I'd guess this is fairly typcial. Most players it seems really only have a few hundred dollars at most.

I guess the lower end of the spectrum applies. People just borrow cards so much these days. I cannot stand borrowing cards. It drives me crazy.

Does it have BB duals? If it's all foil, I imagine a lot of that is in the Ports. Those things are stupidly expensive.
