While I don't like all of Medina's articles, and thats not really his fault as there is only so much to write about in slow months and he still needs to put up an article weekly, I believe, if anything, he leveled the playing field. Eventually someone was going to write about trading for profit, he was the one that got the nod. More on that later though.
I believe most of this thread's concept are somewhat skewed in what they believe a 'dealer' is. I have been playing this game since 4th/Ice age and selling since 98 when I turned 18 and opened an ebay account. I have worked for and am now working with local stores in magic singles.
The secondary market of this game operates in a combination of 2 ways. You have your price fluctation as decks change and values rise and fall ie the stock market. And you also have your 'dealers'. This ranges from SCG or whatever you like all the way down to the guy selling a sqaudron hawk for a buck. To understand this, think drug trade whether you want to or not. The system is the same. The OP brings up a valid question. The answer is actaully very different in relation to online and in the real world. supply and demand. Ppl try to get premium for the cards online but never sell, yet you can very often, as I do, get close to if not full retail in real life, because it saves on shipping and no store has everything. My store lets me sell with 100% profit on 2 conditions. They don't have it and if they do have it I can't sell it etc etc. And as the B&M stores usually pay a lot less, and I mean a LOT less, than online retailers, due to overhead, they tend not to inflate to SCG prices, for the quick turnaround. Giving me an oppurtunity to buy in bulk and have stock, where everyone wins. Sorry it's 6 am and I'm starting to ramble.
Back to the Medina thing. There have been and always will be 'dealers' in this game on every level. If he did anything he gave an edge to the casual player to even the playing field. And the era of getting price quotes from your iphone or whatever, Not really a sky is falling ordeal.
And to be completely honest I am pretty sure I am one of the people, if not directly and in a different direction, that the Topic is about. As I assume most of you know as you scan the trade list daily I had a point system thread for a long while. My 'buy' prices were on the low end and I undercut the high end stuff I was trading at %5-10% bottom line retail. While I did get flamed some with random troll most I still made a lot of trades at dealer prices during the Legacy Boom. Do I think I am Star City Games? No, but at the same time I competed with them and still got business.
For the TLDR people
Medina didn't ruin trading/selling
Your using the term 'dealer' wrong.
