I am making this topic to get peoples opinions before I fully commit to making a choice for the Return to Ravinca guild selection at the pre-release. The obvious starting choice, to me, is Golgari. However, I would love opinions as to why or why not; and what guild you would choose and why.

I think there are a fews ways to look at this one.Pick the guild that has your favorite color pair or legend. Pick the guild that has the highest $ value legend. Pick the guild that has the best legend (probably the same as #2).

I picked Golgari because it best represents my play style since I'm not a great player. It forces me to play a deck i'm more comfortable with.__________________ Member Since 03/28/2001 12000+ posts 1st in posts in Ontario 2nd in posts in Canada 10th in posts on MOTL 5th in Refs in Ontario Pushing to get to top 100 in MOTL Refs

Evasion and removal (and bombs, but that's really outside of your control) are usually the kings of limited. One or both of these can often determine your success. Some people are banking on Azorius because blue and white offer the best evasive creatures, while Rakdos on the other end of the spectrum give you double the chance at removal. Izzet is likely to have lots of tricks and disruption, but fewer creatures, while Selesnya is likely to be reversed - LOTS of creatures, but very limited disruption, save for a few pump spells in combat. Like WeedIan wrote, your play style may dictate what you play more than anything else. If you favor a late game, controlling strategy, Rakdos isn't going to be a appropriate for you, but if you prefer inevitability and power over speed, Azorius' Archon of the Triumvirate looks pretty tempting. I'm pre-registered for two sealed events and I'm going to try to play Azorius first, then Izzet second. I feel like blue is usually very powerful, but underrated and rewards smart play and skill more than hoping to get a turn two Call of the Conclave.

I'm doing 3 pre-releases.Going Golgari for one, just because I love being well rounded. Radkos for the second, because I love stupid aggressiveness at times. Izzet for the third, because I want that pre-release promo. __________________ My 2008 Nationals The Official Tower Magic Facebook Page hilikuS: Also, as much as MAB's list has become the list on the T/A Forum, I do miss Slinga's.

I'm less concerned about winning and will pick my guild based on the colors I prefer (Izzet or Radkos if they available). Regardless, I'm more interested in Dimir in the next set.

I feel Selesnya or Azorius might be the best in limited. Rakdos should be alright and is honestly the one I want to play but am considering something else because I don't know how strong it will really be.Honestly, I think all of the guilds here have sufficient chances at everything good that it won't matter too much. If anything, I'd likely take a closer look at all the U/Cs in the set to come up with which guild is most likely to provide the best overall deck, but that's a lot of work for a couple small local pre-releases.

I might actually go to a Midnight Flight. Why? We're ahead of the rest of the world (GMT+12), so I can proudly say: FIRST!

So you pick your guild and then they give you guild specific packs to open? Will you not have any cards from another guild? What about mono-colored cards? Will you be able to play your legend as well?

I'm doing a Midnight flight as well, because it's the only time I can actually attend (kids will be asleep and I can sleep in a bit the next morning).I registered for Izzet, mainly because I really like the promo (Hypersonic Dragon). Also, I agree that red and blue are particularly strong Limited colors in this set, judging from the cards that have been spoiled. From what I've read, the pre-release guild packs include one "guild-specific booster" and five regular Return to Ravnica boosters. So, even if you lock into a specific guild, I believe you will be able to make any sort of deck you want (splash another color, or evenskip your guild colors altogether). Remember... 40-card decks and 17 lands, so you're basically just trying to pick your 23 best cards that hopefully have a bit of synergy. What I *haven't* seen is what is actually in the guild packs. I'd love to know so I can try planning out the base of my deck... __________________ **I send in bubble mailer + top loader + soft sleeve**AtriumXP@gmail.com (e-mail/PayPal) I answer ref requests! I don't believe you get a legend/planeswalker in the pack (unless you open one). However, the guild-specific promo is perfectly legal to play with and is considered part of your deck building kit.You can check this site for images of the pre-release cards (see the five at the bottom): http://www.magicspoiler.com/mtg-news/return-to-ravnica-promos/

Playing golgari, because it leaves you open to rakdos and selesnya cards (which are the two strongest color combos for comm/unc cards). Also, the guaranteed promo (corpsejack menace) is the most playable and synergizes quite well with the rakdos mechanic.

Going to play Golgari, but I feel like this whole format is like you forcing a color/color combo. Seems like if your other 5 packs are all Izzet gas, you've either got a bad deck, or the guild pack won't help you. Unlikely, but I never like to crack packs in a sealed or draft with something in mind already.

Actually... does anyone know if these pre-release sets come with basic land or should we be planning on bringing some?

Not quite true. The ONLY mythic rare that can be in your guild pack is your guild leader. So, in your izzet pack, you can get Niv, but you wont get Epic Experiment. __________________ "He fights you not because you have wronged him, but because you are there."[16:17] <@BrassMan> what do you need new tech for? Yeah, I went Golgari on one for similar reasons. Promo works well with Unleash cards which shouldn't be too difficult to splash already being G/B. There's another event that I'm not sure which way I want to go yet, but I'm leaning towards Azorius just to try a completely different style. quote: Originally posted by AtriumXP: Actually... does anyone know if these pre-release sets come with basic land or should we be planning on bringing some?
Shouldn't your LGS have a lands station or some supply of basics for drafting/sealed events?

I'm sure they do... I never get out to actually play at the shops though. I'm probably just going to bring some pre-sleeved foil lands so they're ready to go.

Games stores that hold pre-release events get shipped a supply of lands for the event. You should be able to get your land there. If you're bringing your own lands, I recommend not bringing foil lands. Having a deck with all foil lands and all non-foil spells just might be considered as marked cards. Play it safe and bring non-foil lands. __________________ "If you're right 90% of the time, why quibble about the other 3% ?""I intend to live forever. So far, so good."

They'd be considered marked cards even if the entire deck is sleeved? I've never heard of that, especially for an FNM-level tournament. I could see it for maybe a REL-32 or whatever they call it but a pre-release? Worst case is I could de-sleeve it and use what they had... I don't think I'd be stuck unable to play the deck. Still, I appreciate the advice and will check when I get there so I can make the changes if necessary.

This hasn't been true for a long time. Any store should have a supply of lands available, but I have a sealed deck kit that includes all of the lands Nderwife and I might need just to be safe. quote: Originally posted by AtriumXP: They'd be considered marked cards even if the entire deck is sleeved? I'd probably allow it from a newbie who didn't know better, but even at FNM-level, marked cards are marked cards. Foils tend to bend, and even in sleeves, a skilled player can pick them out with pretty high accuracy, so all foil lands could definitely get you in trouble if people think you're abusing it. __________________ There's no need to fear, UNDERDOG is here! All your Gruul Nodorogs are belong to me. yah, fairly sure the stores get charged for the last stations these days. Its likely due to stores reselling them. The store I play at freely gives lands out, but others will charge for basic lands. One store even sold the land station that all stores got a while back (the ones w/ the mana symbols and slots for the lands).
