Wow, look at all these people There is an EV article here, but of course his prices are very high. https://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/the-expected-value-of-iconic-masters I bought a case at $620 (wish I'd waited with all these deals). I pulled 1 Mana Drain, 2 Horizon Canopies, 3 Aether Vials, 2 Ancestral Visions, 2 Flusterstorm, 1 Grove, 2 Thoughseize, 2 Elesh Norn, 1 Consecrated Sphinx, 1 Vorinclex, 1 Magus, 2 Primeval Titans, 2 Serra Ascendant, 2 Glimpse, 2 Bloodghast, 4 Mishra's Bauble, etc. When I added it all up at realistic prices, figure about $450, so maybe EV is around $125. Of course if you hit the Mana Drain, probably going to come out ahead.

Aren't there several shops in the twin cities area? I'm sure some of them have tournaments or at least casual MTG.

I don't play in tournaments, and I only play EDH/Commander, and Cube these days... But its the cliques/groups at the three biggest shops, and the rampant cheating at the smaller ones I've tried. Combined with no longer enjoying EDH/Commander anymore since no one interacts with the other players - its all combo combo combo by turn 4-5.... And there's no Cube groups around for me to join that aren't already part of the before-mentioned cliques.

This old school format is great. Not only does it bring me back to the old days of playing during unlimited, all my stuff from back in the day is ridiculously valuable. RV shivans at $5?! Collector's edition lotuses at $1000!

which reminds me, can someone verify that having a complete set of RV duals is nuts right now, value wise? Not into pricing anymore, but can someone tell me what they're worth? roughly? and were to sell them? __________________ I'm a geek, you're a geek. NM Underground Sea (RV) is approaching ONE THOUSAND GODDAMN DOLLARS on TCGPlayer. There's one NM Trop at $800, Volcanics are $550 NM. The lesser duals are creeping in on $200-300 (or higher) each for NM. Completely disgusting.
My Tabernacle (italian) has become such an obscene investment, I'm considering ACTUAL INVESTING more money in Reserved list cards. Over 300% growth in a year. **** me.

Shivan Dragon used to be one of the top creatures back in the day. I paid $10 for one myself in the ‘90s. It’s kind of funny how the great cards from back in the day—the ones that have been completely outclassed—are valuable again.

There is value to NM or pack fresh Revised cards simply because they are nearly 25 years old now. That's why those cards like Shivan Dragon, Royal Assassin, Sedge Troll, etc are valuable again instead of being $1-2 like they were for years.

well, this is my official announcement, I'm quitting MTG for ever. Once all my trades in progress are done here, or on deckbox, I;m just putting the entire thing on craigslist, and notifying the stores and rich players in the area. Been a good, mostly, long run. But I tried playing one more time and there was no enjoyment. Farethee well Nicol Bolas, and may you reign eternal.

Thanks for the notice and good luck! We'll see you in a few years. Enjoy the hiatus

After I built my first standard deck in 2 years, played it once, then they banned it I decided I'm way too tired of all the bans and all the bad changes they've made so I'm done as well. I hope you find a new exciting hobby. I'm thinking maybe I'll buy a telescope....

I'm getting deeper into my headphone/hi-fi hobby, going to use my Tabernacle to buy a Focal Clear and a Marantz DAC1 to start. Maybe even upgrade my 4790K to a 8700K, maybe not ... don't really want windows 10...

As I slowly add my collection into deckbox, it becomes ever more apparent just how silly the price of ink on cardboard is.All my non-decked cards, and three of my dozen or so EDH decks have been added. (and not counting added value of signed/altered cards...) I've gone back and done my best to track my spending on magic since I really got back into the game a few years ago and started buying duals and other high value cards - tcgplayer, trollandtoad, ebay, sccg, cfb, and a few others. Then I added another number with some zeros after it for the random stuff I know I purchased in various LGSs. It totals a rather healthy amount. Adding up all the cards I own over a united states buck, and at their present value and some ridiculously obscene number comes up. THAT. IS. JUST. ****ED. (yes, most of that is in reserved list cards and multi-format staples) But, ****. I have another eight or nine mostly-tuned EDH decks to still add to that count, what the **** I knew I could put a down payment on a house. I didn't think I'd be able to buy a nice used car too - and a totl computer, and some other stuff too. ------
Biggest gains by % was Yawgmoth's Will, I brought a few of them at $5-10 each a few years ago. Volrath's Stronghold's also at $8-10, Blackcleave Cliffs was $3 when I got one... WHAT THE HELL. It's $40+? And the list just goes on and on, 100% gains, 200, 300, 400 and 500%+ gains on a lot of these damn cards in 3-4 years. What is this insanity?

I'm beginning to wonder if cryptocurrency isn't a legitimate reason for the spike in prices. I thought it was bull**** before but I know for a fact that's what boned me out of buying a good video card for years. I guess I'm wondering "why magic?" if it's true. I really don't think these prices follow a pure supply-and-demand model any more.

It’s crazy how valuable your collection can become if you keep on adding to it and nurturing it. It seems like a lot of money for cardboard and I think most outsiders would agree. However, MTG is just a drop in the bucket compared to other things you could collect - art, cars, memorabilia, etc. However, it can be tough to justify any collectible when you think of how many essentials you can buy with the money.

I told my dad I was selling my collection because I stopped playing, he asked me how much I spent. So I told him a few thousand. Then he got angry. Then I told him I've got three offers (and threw out a 4th lowball) for over $20,000. He asked what color corvette I was buying.
