After reading a few posts by some of our more "colorful" newer members; I started thinking of this page.I posted it in PFMS but I think it more deserves mention here. Anyone else remember this with a certain fondness? Looking at this thread still makes me wistful. http://classic.magictraders.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/017219.html

Related: as much as I'd love to have pyro around again, I doubt he'd come back. I'm friends with him on Facebook and he hasn't been active in years. Still love that mofo to death though

so I've been at my new job for about 6 weeks. When they made an offer to me, it was worded as "$We are able to offer you $XX/Hour without benefits and $XY.00/hour with benefits."Turns out the "with benefits" means "the option to purchase benefits for $130 a month." I realize $130/month is pretty cheap for decent health insurance, but I'm only working 4 days a week. Do I have a right to complain about it?

You can do whatever you want, but you should have inquired further about it, IMO... I pay about $120 for good ins. I'd probably keep the benefits if I were you. You NEVER know when something unforseen will occur. This is especially true if you have kids/wife. I had to take my daughter to the ER last Summer and even though I have damn good ins. It still cost me like $800

Is Y>X? If not, that's very deceptive of them, but I doubt it's actually illegal. If so, then the insurance is covered by the difference. That leads me to believe Y<X. Otherwise, why would you ask about it? __________________ *My LJ*Letter Bombs!*FB*Logout- MM is a copycat! (So am I)*CKGB

It might sound sneaky now from your perspective, but most people at most other jobs also have to pay for their "benefits." "Benefits" really mean, you're pre-approved to join and be a member and here is the discount rate for our bundle of benefits. I assume you're young. You can probably get your own insurance (if it's important to you) for roughly the same price if you're healthy. Instead of complain, maybe you could try to get the $XX/hr without benefits. You probably would be saving your company some money that route. They should be happier?

Yeah, I'm starting to realize that. And I haven't been able to get insurance on my own. Stupid pre-existing conditions. So I'm not gonna rock that boat. However, they did deduct the full bi-monthly amount instead of a pro-rated amount for when I was eligible.

If you have a pre-existing condition, you should realize how fortunate you are to be able to get a guaranteed insurance quote for $130. I think it's okay to ask HR to see if they can give you a slight adjustment for the pro-rate. I know most people don't like to actually work/do their job/do the right thing, but it's worth a try. Don't rock the boat. But if you come at them like hey this is my first pay-check and i haven't saved up a lot, every little bit helps. It's better. I don't think they can be-grudge you for trying to save money. If the job is good and it's not much money, you know whether or not it's worth it. 1st impressions are important. Ask stupid Joz. Oh wait, he's banned. Ask marlo instead. quote: Originally posted by JoshSherman: Is Y>X? Ask the accountant if it's cheaper to pay you more salary or have you on their insurance rolls, I'm sure most of the time he says it's cheaper to just pay employees more. If you want to know, it's probably much cheaper for most folks to take a cut in pay in exchange for the insurance rates their companies offer. That's why it's called benefits. And it's a real incentive to stay working there. My wife's health insurance costs her company $600 a month and $150 of it a month comes out-of-pocket. We'd be able to get close to that on our own. Maybe the company could let her use the whole $600 and get her own insurance and save the rest? hahaha We are fortunate and have good health and youth for now. Luckier than a lot of other folks.
