I posted this on the Artist contact post, but I figured I'd put it out here for those that don't check that topic.2013 is Magic The Gathering's 20th anniversary. Over 30 of the game's original artists are commemorating with a new art book. They have a kickstarter going here. Check it out.

How does this work? If they get the funds they needs, are they going to make a publishing for retail or are the current copies the only ones that will be available...ever?

They are only doing the amount listed on the kick starter, no extras.

I think they add different stuff. Menges posted that he'd list them shortly after the goal was reached.

Yes, you'd have to buy in again in most cases.

I was looking over the backers, I see a lot of MOTL members there.

The backer page is a very interesting read - Couple of artists on there (Liz Danforth / Cynthia Shepherd) - Monty from WOTC - Daniel Chang backed it 7 times...We can be sure that there will be some interesting Ebay-Auctions at the end of the year...

I went for the book + sketches. Seems like the best bang for the buck, I think. If you want it, you'd better hurry up; that option is almost over.

Stretch goals have been added, those of you that backed should have received an email from Jeff listing them.If not: Thank you to all the backers who got The Gathering fully funded in 21 hours and 30 minutes. Amazing! We're getting a lot of questions about buying extra books, or 'add-ons' as they're often known around Kickstarter. The problem is this book is available in a very finite amount of copies. Add-ons can get crazy as people ask for "three more hardcovers" so rather than take that route we're opening up a couple more tiers (see below). We'd thought the Completist level would satisfy the few of you that would want more than one copy but we clearly underestimated the draw of that tier. We're making three changes - two new tiers and one very specific add-on. The Two-Fer Reward Tier offers you a Softcover and a Hardcover edition at a small saving. The Near-Completist Reward Tier offers you the Softcover, Hardcover and Numbered Limited Collector's Edition, without the sketches. And the Library Add-On. Just click 'Manage Your Pledge' and add $25 to your total to get a softcover edition mailed to the library of your choice. When the campaign closes, your questionnaire will ask you what the bonus pledge was for. Write 'Library Add-On' and include the address for the library. If it's not a legit library, you'll be refunded the $25. Unfortunately this offer is limited to the U.S. Stretch Goals Okay, we're starting off with a couple of simple ones that'll enhance the awesome book cover. And on the first one you've almost reached the goal already! At $42,000 we'll add Spot Gloss to the cover! What's spot gloss? Have you ever seen a book cover where a few elements are made to stand out by being glossier than the rest of the cover? Yup, that's spot gloss! We like it. At $52,000 we'll add Foil Stamping to the cover! Awesome metallic stamping. The softcover and hardcover editions will receive their first foil stamp. The numbered collector's edition gains a second foil stamp (it already had one, but we might have forgotten to tell you in all the craziness)! What's next? Hint: It's not about the book cover. Stay tuned...

I looked at this not more than 3 hours ago but didn't have my CC info with me. 16 spots left and they all went in that time, kind of a bummer. BUT, the fact that this has so many generous backers so far is great news.

The $110 one is the same thing, just without the sketches.

Another update from Jeff:I've been informed that the foil stamping is not for the softcover (apparently it's not the best mix) so that stretch goal is just for the hardcover and the numbered collector's edition. And because of that, we will lower the stretch goal from $52,000 to $48,000. Which means we get to the next cool thing faster... Hey, not so bad after all!

True, but the sketches are a big attraction for me. I might go for the library donation, that's an awesome idea.

The latest from Jeff:The next stretch goal is one I've been looking forward to revealing... At $60,000 The Gathering will grow to 96 pages and will gain a Bonus section filled with sketches from the development of the book's many paintings and a few extra surprises that the artists want to throw at us. Time to get your buddies on board so we can get that sweet Bonus section ready to go!

Stretch goals are not additional buyin goals. They are goals that when the project hits a certain amount of money they open up to everyone that they apply to. Ad-ons are additions that you can add money to your pledge through the pledge manager to get additional things. On kickstarter, you can only pledge once per project. If you are going to pledge more money to a project with an add-on, DO NOT cancel your pledge, you go into the pledge manager and modify the pledge amount. If you cancel your pledge for a limited # tier, and someone jumps in and grabs it when it opens up, you are screwed. If anyone has any kickstarter questions, feel free to PM or email me, as I have been using it for years and have donated to over 60 projects and an very familiar with the site. Jason
