Ok, so I'm destroying a TV (too big to get out of my house, so I have to disassemble it. AND MAN, its one hard task. Its a tv from the 80s or 90s, very big, at least 60 inches (almost as tall as me : so probably below 1.7 meters)

Where should I go to get rid of the lens? It says on it : Warning, radiation!!

It's a very bad idea to go anywhere near the guts of a CRT. You could zap yourself dead.

Oh, and remember the good old days when electronics were designed to last? Sounds like your tv came from then.

Don't do that. I've heard quite a few cases of people touching the wrong thing and getting killed. No joke.

O.o!!

Well, so far, I'm still alive.... I managed to get out the main 'processor(?)' out, basically the electronic part. Now, I just have to disassemble the 'case'. Its basically a huge tv support that has wheel so you can move it around. However, without disassembling it, there's no way we can move it out of our house

Since I've survived the remove the lens part, where should I go to dispose of them?

Robert

I vaguely remember somebody telling me that sometimes old tv's can hold a charge for days after being unplugged and give you one heck of a zap. Don't know if there's any truth to that tho

On a lighter note, in a couple days all you americans will be celebrating with the two things you love most: alcohol and explosives.

QFT. Disassembling CRTs is not only a great way to electrocute yourself, but to do some good damage in other ways. CRTs contain a hefty amount of lead, which is obviously bad...but it's in there to shield consumers from some serious radiation the tech gives off.

Of course, if you have to disassemble it to take it out of the house, that begs the question of how exactly it was installed in the first place O.o

If it's not plugged in, and you give it a bit of time to let the capacitors discharge, you're not going to electrocute yourself. Radiation isn't an issue unless it's on, as far as I know.

The lamp does state that it is dangerous when turned on without the protective glass...

It was very dusty, and I hope there weren't some toxic gas inside

Its almost fully dismantled now. The electronic are intact. I haven't touched any of it, except removing the cables that were attached to the speakers

Speaking of speakers, do you think they are re-usable (even if I am to throw away the power+lamp?) They are really big and I remember the sound quality on them was actually REALLY nice.

Just rewire them and you're good to go for the speakers.

Whenever you buy a new TV you pay a disposal fee thats hidden. Nearly any landfill takes them free of charge along with computer monitors, at least here in California we do. It saves them some illegal dumping and ensures the stuff gets recycled.

They still charge for washers/dryers and refrigerated units but if you're not e-cycling or your town doesn't then you're a fool and so are they...

I must disagree with that statement, I'm an american and I love two things more then that.

My friends and MTG, in fact, there is a whole list of stuff as that I love/like more then Alcohol and Explosives.

All sarcasm aside, these are indeed two of my favorite things, and I shall celebrate with both of them. And two of my other favorite things, my friends and scantily clad women. It shall be a day of rejoicing.

If you want to be safe, get a metal bar or wand (or big screwdriver) and ground (a metal part of the case, something that will actually conduct) it with wire, then insulate a handle with something, then (wearing gloves and rubber boots if you're really scared) stick the tip of your grounding instrument underneath the anode (look for a suction cup) on the back of the tube. Voila - your tube is now discharged safe for handling.

If you have a resistor of some sort laying around you can put it in series with your wand to slow the discharge rate but it's not really necessary, just added precaution.

HAHA totally forgot Digital Underground was in the movie "Nothing But Trouble" that scene where they perform in the crazy courtroom was priceless.

Seeing Tupac in a Chevy Chase movie was hilarious too.

You need to work on your Gaydar my friend. Not trying to offend anyone or anything, sorry if that came off weird, but it's the best way to put it. I never hit on lesbians, I can spot them a mile away. Best of luck to you amigo.

So, my 4th. Sheer. Effin'. Awesomeness. Rolled out to the country with all my friends from way back, drank OBSCENE amounts of alcohol, cruised on the 4 wheeler, fired of shotguns, blew up $700 worth of fireworks, played bocce (sp?) ball, beer pong, threw the baseball around, swam, rode horses....the list goes on. It was an amazing couple of days. And the most irresponsible thing I did was use my buddy's dad's phone to take a picture of my balls and make it his background. Fairly proud of myself, all things considered.
