I mean, boycott it, something, I dunno. I can sign up for a pro boards site for free with more features and probably better security.
Migrating over is looking to be the best maneuver at this point. At least we can put somebody in charge that doesn't troll us by having the only thing updated be some random MTGO drafter...

Oh, I think that's what people call MOTL when they say it out loud. At least I do. Like if motl was a word, and not an acronym, it'd be pronounced mottle.

I CAN'T DO ANYTHING. I can ban, I can fix emails, I can warn, I can post announcements, I can open and close threads. That's ALL. I try my best to keep the different Canadian rippers separate. Yes, it was my fault that I didn't notice the address was from Quebec and not Ontario. Whoops. I'm human, just like anyone else I make mistakes. I caught on that Peter MacNamara wasn't you though, and he even lives in Ontario. No props for that? Me and the other Moderating staff, we do what we can to try and make this a safer place for everyone, but we can only do so much. This IS the best we can do. I'm sorry if it's not enough.
Thanks, Jazaray
Hey Jaz, I believe you are doing the best you can along with the other MODS. This is a free site and with that comes risk. Even with better security, there will always be risk. Any site will have its level of people trying to rip people off. Happens IRL trading and at events and it happens here as well. Unfortunately still a lot of people who don't have moray's and scruples or haven't grown up to learn to respect others. Just keep doing what you are doing and yes, you are human and we all make mistakes. By the way, do you all ever refresh the active MODS's or expand them? I do get benefit by being on this site and "an older" MOTLER who wouldn't mind helping out. I probably come here once a day for updates and not an active player (occasional cuber with a few friends), but I still sell, trade or buy what little I need these days. Send me an email or pm if the site needs help in that respect. I appreciate all that you and the MODS do to keep the place going. Greg

I think that what this site needs, to be more secure, is very simple. Require all registered users to provide the following.1. A clear picture of themselves holding their username and their ID 2. A clear scan or picture(fully readable)of their id with their username in the picture. 3. Pay $1 to have a letter mailed to your physical address (the one on your ID) with a code to verify their accounts activation. These 3 things would positively identify each individual. This would also easily allow for any rippers to be publicly shamed in all MTG communities. The biggest problem is that these bastards are using abandoned accounts to do their bidding. I suggest that you ban all accounts that have been inactive for the last 6 months or more. If someone really wants to come back after 6 months+ away, they can verify themselves or re-verify if necessary.

Really. That's very inconvenient and who wants their IDs posted online. And no one is going to keep monitoring accounts for inactivity. And people move without changing their IDs. I am active military and have had 4 Addresses in 2 years, NONE of which are in Wisconsin, where i received my license. There are a lot of ways to fix it, but do not forget that the first step is having an owner who cares about the security of the site. 'Operating' this site is a neglected pet project.

Epicnpc.com has a bunch of different tiers of user groups with different levels of verification.

Well, what about facebook and myspace type sites? If you have a facebook, for instance, you have pictures of yourself/family/friends. And everyone there "knows" you. That is some form of self-verification right there. Eventually I can see the whole internet being tied together with this sort of mass-community surveillance. Anyone trying to build a "scam" account would need to create a whole "life" for themselves in an online account to look legit. And even then it would only work once, which can be said for any user here with 100+ refs (he could always rip one time, the very last deal before banned). The more accounts you ban at once (if the facebook is linked to the MTG site then the scammer loses both as authentication) the bigger the risk and more time consuming it becomes to rip.

Lol, true. Creating a catfish account to trade magic cards would take 30 minutes. And would net $1000 from backpack traders in a week.

Tv show, but popularized by Mante T'eo, homosexual football player from Notre Dame who snap chap dated a dude for 6 months and claimed he was in a relationship with him until it became public knowledge that it was a dude, then he claimed she died, only for everyone to realize it was a fake relationship and he's gay (not that there's anything wrong with that).

In a nutshell, the above. My point is that it's not uncommon for people to create profiles like that, for one reason or another. If people do it to have "relationships", then I don't think it's a stretch that someone here could do it too.

its just more locks on your house. You can always argue that all they do is slow thieves down. Dogs, locks, cameras, lasers, ninjas, no good because they just slow thieves down? I am not actually suggesting we implement anything at all. I am only pointing out that this is where we as a civilization are heading anyways. You do not think that your children will be paying with paypal through the cashiers soon? The minute "they" connect anything with money you have thieves.
