It's been like a "meh" to a "I could be doing better" and I'm just shy of two years.

Am I the only one who feels like he should office space this situation. Just show up, do nothing and keep getting paid?

that'll just make him resent the place more, and could end up with him being fired, which poses a large number of problems down the road. better to actively seek new employ while on good terms with the current one.

It's hard express sarcasm over the internet. My post was not meant to be taken seriously. I thought the office space reference would have given it away.

I thought the Office Space reference was funny, but you gotta put the disclaimer in there because waaaaaay too many people do it, which is why it was in the movie. But yeah, slackers are not cool...but slackin' is so much fun...how do I get out of this?

Trying to line stuff up, found a place I am headed down to in a couple weeks to Check out. The problem is being an engineer and not wanting to reside in a cubicle seem to be a very very tough thing to find.

You're looking at it wrong. The cube is my home base, but I don't have to stay there if I don't want. It's just a convenient place to start each day. From there, I can go spend the day in the Lab, Model Shop, Tool Room, Mfg, pretty much wherever. It all depends on what I'm working on, but I'm certainly not chained to the desk (like the accountants are ).

I'd like to travel/meet with customers/go to the field and spend 20% or less at a desk. I've spent a lot of my life sitting behind a computer and I'm not looking to do more.

It's either a cubicle or a plant-type environment. Good luck. quote: Originally posted by coasterdude84: You're looking at it wrong. Ermmm not exactly. There are some companies where engineers are absolutely tied to a desk. It depends on certain things, such as how long your leash is and what your supervisor/company expects of you.

I have no way for me to be by family and I just have the girlfriend who is willing to relocate. The opportunities may be scarce but willingness to relocate to a lot of different places should help me land a gig. I have also considered a technical marketing role as an option.

That's certainly true, but I maintain that's also what they've chosen for themselves, usually by working for a huge outfit like Boeing or Caterpillar. Working for a small to midsized company usually affords you a longer leash. At least, that's what I've observed having been on both ends of that spectrum. quote: Originally posted by oneofchaos: I have also considered a technical marketing role as an option.
Have you considered industrial sales? We have about 75 sales guys in the US (and they work directly for us, they're not just manufacturer reps), and I'd say probably 1/4 of them or so are engineers that had the same outlook as you. The local guys each have a desk here, and I see them maybe once or twice a month. The rest of the time, they work out of their home or are on the road.
