Yesterday I saw a funny thing at the shop. New guy comes in, clearly not up to date with magic prices. A dude we know wanted his dark confidants. New guy values them at ~10 each. Everyone else at the table looked at each other but no one said anything. At the end of the trade:New Guy: +4 steam vent (20) +4 hallow fountain (20) +4 temple garden (15) +4 blood crypt (15) +4 overgrown tomb (15) =300 -4 dark confidant (10) -4 mutavault (8) -4 cryptic command (4) -3 damnation (10) -3 thoughtseize (12) -4 bitterblossom (5) -6 venser shaper savant (2.5) -4 sower of temptation (2.5) -2 tarmogoyf (50) = 299 The guy is kinda my friend, but one of those that you talk to at the shop but you don't see at all outside of it. I felt kinda bad, but I didn't know the other guy at all and my friend would lend me cards for decks here and there. Would you have stepped in? Or would you also be affect by the bystander effect? ps. The friend did buy us all a soda afterwards because he was in an amazing mood

As a former shark, I wouldn't have said anything before the trade. After, I would give the guy a pat on the back and be envious, though.__________________ Check out the greatest store in Southeastern Pennsylvania: Stomping Grounds Games & Hobbies! www.sggamesandhobbies.com Serra Angel Count: 1314 Nightmare Count: 255 DCI Judge Level 1 PlasteredDragon - Gone but not forgotten

This should be standard practice in situations such as these. Keep your mouth shut, keep your thirst quenched is what I always say.

Hah. Also, I'm confused. it sounds like the trade was damn near even. New guy just got a lot of shocks. __________________ It is a known fact that more Americans watch the television than any other appliance.

It is the age of technology, smartphones are everywhere and he probably had access to the internet at his house, so the onus is kinda on him to know the values of what he has. At the very least he could've asked someone else to look up values if he didn't have a phone. That being said, if I had witnessed something like this at my LGS I probably would've said something unless the new guy was being an ******* beforehand.

I woulda thought that the shocklands alone would trade straight up even for the confidants. Maybe its just me. If the "new guy" seemed like a nice enough guy, I would of stepped in and said, he could use my cell phone to look up prices. I never like to see a fellow magic player bent over in such a way.

well if he was lied to on prices, if he asked. Like what are they worth question, i would say something. If not I keep my nose out. I mean you don't sit down and trade if you don't know what your cards are worth.

True, but I tend to agree with majicman on this one. I see this too many times with younger kids who just trade 'rare for rare' This situation comes up from time to time for me: I trade with Player Y. He states he needs a $10 card, I say I need card Z, he says it's worth $5, when in actuality, it's worth $10-$12. Almost every time I will tell him what it is actually worth, and most times, they are still willing to trade straight up. However, if I find cards at a dealer that recently spiked and they haven't changed their prices, I'm gonna jump on that all day. __________________ -Schmitty 84th in Refs [293] on MOTL (2 behind jbp26) 2nd in Refs [293] in OH-IO (68 behind souladvocate) 2nd in Posts [7936] in OH-IO (only 150 behind Val!) “If Brad Stevens is the future of coaching in college basketball, the sport is in a good place.” - Rick Pitino

Well he said new guy. Guy had Bobs n good stuff. Wasn't a kid doing a rare for rare. He's an adult. He should know better. I won't sit by and see a child taken advantage of or someone lied to. An adult well they made it that far they can take care of themselves. I'm not saying I like it but it isn't my place to butt in on trades. On another note. KARMA.

If prices were asked, I would be honest. My view is if both people are happy, then its fine. Know what you have before trading

Who wouldn't be in a amazing mood after making over a grand? Also would I have said anything? Probably not unless I thought I could make a better offer based on what the "New Guy" Wanted. __________________ I shall have the souls of all who defy me. "Lord Crovax"

Happens all the time though, at every shop I've ever been to, near impossible to stop (Seen people get banned for trying), in the end just took up the better me get it then others approach.

If new guy was somewhat mature, then he now knows who his new friends aren't.If new guy was just a kid, then somebody should have stepped in.

These types of stories sicken me and are exactly why I would never cut it as a dealer.I would have stepped in without a second thought. I may not win any friends among that group of thieves, but I honestly don't need friends like that anyway. __________________ Wisconsin - smells like dairy air!I collect Granite Gargoyles. I bought a Alpha force of nature off a kid at my local shop for $5.00 cause he asked everyone at the table what it was worth and someone said $3.00. I went up and told the store owner what was going on down there then told the kid what the card was really worth and he really really should take the time to know what he's selling before selling/trading. I saw him latering selling beta bolts for $4-5 each So I started thinking this kid was just really dumb or he must have stole the cards to begin with.

If said new guy was an adult I see no problem. Say a local card store opens near you and cracks a bunch of product and starts selling singles to get inventory going. You need a card and they happen to have it marked $5 lower than it should be. Are you going to ask them to take another $5 from you. Fine line between ethics and capitalizing on scenarios to put bread on the table.
