Have you got any more examples of this? To use for reference?

You didnt say make up your own cards. In fact you used real cards for the example. I guess I should have asked first. I can create my own cards. I feel like it would have been easier to do that than having to use multiple resources to put my "smith" cycle together. It is fine, guess I just misunderstood the task

The name of the contest is "CREATE YOUR OWN CARD CONTEST"

And you didn't "put [your] 'smith' cycle together", you just copied it verbatim.

Yeah I think he meant you can take any card in magic, and use it to base your new cycle on. I might be mistaken.

I think by "Choose an existing theme" he meant "You could take a cycle like "3 for 1" or "big creatures with splashy abilities that have WUBRG as an alternate casting cost" as existing cycle themes and use that same theme with 5 new cards.

Not "Take an existing card as 1 of your 5 and make a cycle of it"

Cycle:
This cycle is my take on the miracle mechanic. The flavor is that someone really wants something and makes a wish, usually, that wish isn’t granted. So that person wishes again, and again and again. At the same time, that person also works for what he/she wants on top of just wishing for stuff. Eventually, a higher being hears the wish enough times and sees how hard that person has been working towards his/her goal and gives that person a "boost" in the form of a wish. So in the design of these cards, each of these spell is like a wish (also, each spell does something because that person is also making an effort towards his/her goal) and after wishing/working for it enough times, a higher power grants that person the wish in the form of a huge effect.

The quotes all come from one source, but I chose to not give the source a name to instill more mystery. I wanted each card to not completely suck on its own but not strictly better than the most commonly played slot in the current decks. So each card does something unique and can be good in a deck even if the “wish” isn’t granted. I also tried to balance out how powerful the “wish” effect is to how good the spell is by itself. For example, the red base effect is more powerful than the white’s, but the white ultimate is more powerful than the red’s.

Once Upon a Time
U – Sorcery (Rare)

RR, shuffle 4 cards named ~ from exiled into your library: ~ deals 10 damage to target creature or player. Damage can’t be prevented this turn. Players can’t gain life this turn.

“Such endless rage; my fire will lead you”

Once Upon a Life
G – Sorcery (Rare)

Put a 1/2 Spider token with reach onto the battlefield. If an opponent controls more creature than you do, put another 1/2 Spider token with reach onto the battlefield. Exile ~.

“Such relentless will; my army will follow you”

xxx

Once Upon a Hope
W – Sorcery (Rare)

Prevent all damage that would be dealt to creatures you control this turn. If a creature you control would be blocked this turn, untap that creature it gains lifelink until end of turn. Exile ~.

WW, shuffle 4 cards named ~ from exiled into your library: Search your library for two enchantments and put them onto the battlefield.

“Such adamant conviction, my spirit will bless you”

xxx

Once Upon a Grave
B – Sorcery (Rare)

Target player discards a card. Unless that player discarded a creature card, that player loses 3 life. Exile ~.

BB, shuffle 4 cards named ~ from exiled into your library: Destroy all creatures you don’t control. They can’t be regenerated. If a creature would enter the battlefield this turn, put that creature into its owner’s graveyard instead.

“Such hated soul, my power will embrace you.”

Multiplier:

When I was signing up for my account my gf at the time interrupted me half way through and I had to read one of her essays or something. But I was super anxious to sign up for my account; I told her that while I was reading her essay, she had to finishing signing up the account for me. When she got the SN part, she asked me what I wanted and like an idiot, I told her she can just pick one for me. Unfortunately for me, earlier that day we saw some incredibly fat cows and we had like a thousand jokes about how those things would just eat everything in sight and will be super fat forever.

So since my SN is fluffycow, I am staying true to how the SN came from, I think the card should be a creature that simply eats everything. It needs feeding all the time and if you don’t feed it, it will eat everything you have (couch, cars, etc) and it will get bigger and hungrier the more you feed it. If you unleash it in someone’s house…oh man, good luck.

Fluffycow, the Fat
1WBG – Legendary Creature –Cow (Mythic)

Cumulative Upkeep – Exile another permanent you control.

If the cumulative upkeep cost of ~ is not paid, exile all other permanent you control instead of sacrificing ~.

~ get +1/+1 for each non-token permanent exiled with ~.

If ~ would deal damage to a permanent, exile it instead.

When ~ deals damage to you player, that player exiles that many permanents.

Elspeth: Why are you so fat?
Fluffycow: Why are you dinner?
- That means 2 things

edit: added in some explanations and revised the black card so it's less confusing.

Ok, here we go.

First off, the cycle. Either this gets rated top notch for creativity , or it fails to meet your requirements. I don't like cycles, at least, not the 'Horizontal' ones. You always find that 2, sometimes 3 of the cards are way stronger than the others. For example, the original Alpha Cycle. Giant Growth and Healing Salve are clearly Single-A status where the other 3 play in the Majors.

So I came to this cycle, known as 'Vertical'. Anyone who has played Onslaught block remembers Torment*, the heavy black set? In that set there was a 3-card black cycle (Sickening Dreams, Insidious Dreams, Restless Dreams) that are Instant and Sorceries, so I thought I do something like that based off my favorite card and color at the moment (not counting AEther Storm), Pox.
*(Apocalypse has 3 Bloodfire creatures, also a vertical cycle).
I split up Pox-effects on several cards adding benefits, and pushing mono-black.

Painful Gaze
B – Uncommon
Sorcery

As an additional cost to play Painful Gaze, discard a black card from your hand.
Reveal the top 2 cards from your library. Put a black card revealed this way into your hand and the rest into your graveyard.

Staring at the horror before him, Nilo completely forgot his strategy. Until he thought of a new one: Run.

Acolyte of Pain
BB – Uncommon
Creature – Human Wizard

As an additional cost to play Acolyte of Pain, sacrifice a Swamp you control.
Whenever a Swamp enters the battlefield under your control, add BB to your mana pool.

Chanting the name of their leader, each member cuts themselves, their blood strengthening the ritual.

2/1

Painful Benefits
BBB – Common
Sorcery

As an additional cost to play Painful Benefits, sacrifice a black creature you control.
Destroy two target non-black creatures.

“Cover my retreat! There’s only two of them, you can take ‘em.”
Grol to Urrg, final words.

Circle of Pain
1BBB – Rare
Enchantment

As an additional cost to play Circle of Pain, pay 3 life.
Whenever a non-black permanent is put into a graveyard from play, you gain 1 life.
Whenever a black permanent is put into a graveyard from play, each opponent loses 1 life.

Mephid, Master of Pain
1BBBB – Mythic
Legendary Creature – Demon Lord

When Mephid, Lord of Pain enters the battlefield, your life total becomes 1.
Flying, deathtouch.
When Mephid, Lord of Pain deals combat damage to a player, each opponent loses 1 life, discards a card, sacrifices a creature, then sacrifices a land.

Feeding of screams and the sounds of torture, Mephid discovered that humans have more than one breaking level when it comes to pain tolerance.

5/4

Now for Æther Storm. I chose this username because I think the art is the best art on a Magic card. It really grabbed my focus and it hasn't diminished a bit. I actually have a full-color tattoo of the artwork on my left-shoulder blade (about 11x11 cm) for 13 years now. In combination with the flavor text of 5th Edition (Thunder in the Wind / No rain / Peace mourns its passing) it hit my person hard all that time ago. I had a really rough year in school at one point, friends who got into dealing coke were threatened with their lives or beaten at home by their parents, (we were teenagers..), no sense of direction of what I was going to do (still don't really ) and everybody came to me with their problems to talk and/or ask for help. I could (still can) help people generally pretty well, but as for myself I didn't turn to other people.
So, to make a long story short (there is a lot more stuff that I won't bore you with), I kept all that confusion/frustration/whatever it was inside. On the outside I was all calm, but inside it felt like a .. Storm! You guessed it!

Anyway, most of it worked out in the end, but when a former colleague of mine got her 3rd tattoo I thought that I needed something to reming me how I got out of that downspiraling slope, to remind me where I had been and where I was then and I could think of no better reminder than a tattoo that said "Me" all over it.

Æther Storm
2UB – Rare
Legendary Sorcery

Æther Storm can not be countered.
Tap all permanents. Those permanents do not untap during their controllers’ next untap step.
Each player exiles X cards from his or her hand, then draws X cards, where X is the number of lands he or she controls.

“Thanks son, but I don’t think an umbrella would do any good right now.”

This is the spell I would have wanted back then.
Tapping all permanents relates to me wanting all the 'threats' in my life back then removed, buying me some time, and the discarding / drawing effect refers to discarding/removing all dark thoughts and feelings and replacing them with something (hopefully) better.

So, this is it. Hope you liked it.

Sigh, the flavor text in AEther Storm should be in Italics. But you get it.

I really like to draft. It's my favorite format to play. So, what we have here is a draftable cycle for a basic set.

The pictures on each card is just a regular town scene. The guys walking around a street in the appropriate colored robes.

Cards 1 - 5:

Disciple of Justice
WW Uncommon
Creature - Human Cleric

2T: Choose one-- Gain 2 life -or- target creature gains vigilance until end of turn.

2/2

We read scriptures to our prisoners and so they are enlightened. We do not kill, we rehabilitate.

Disciple of the Wild
GG Uncommon
Creature - Human Cleric

2T: Choose one -- Target creature gains +2/+2 -or- trample until end of turn.

2/2

They live among the twisted roots of the oldest trees. While they enjoy solitude, they never hunt alone.

Disciple of Pain
RR Uncommon
Creature - Human Cleric

2T: Choose one -- Deal 2 damage to target creature or player -or- target creature gains haste.

2/2

They whip themselves to fuel their rites. If one succumbs to the agony, another takes up the whip.

Disciple of the Mind
UU Uncommon

2T: Choose one -- Scry 2 -or- target creature gains flying until end of turn.

2/2

When you see their azure blue robes, know that your secrets are never safe.

Disciple of Disease
BB Uncommon
Creature - Human Cleric

2T: Choose one -- Target creature gains -2/-2 until end of turn -or- target creature gains deathtouch until end of turn.

2/2

Do not breathe too deeply around them. The death cloys to their fabric and yours is soon to follow.

Card 6.

Jazaray, Last Warden of MOTL
WUBRG Mythic Rare
Legendary Creature - Human Wizard

Vigilance, Trample, Reach
When Jazaray, Last Warden of MOTL enters the battlefield choose a creature on the battlefield and detain it. If Jazaray, Last Warden of MOTL is the only creature you control, it gains haste.

7/7

The plane of MOTL had been devastated. Only one stood against the tide. Only one pushed back against the enclosing darkness.

Picture - a hot chick in the "Captain Morgan's" pose, but holding a large hammer up in the air.

She's modeled after myself being the last active mod/staff on MOTL She can detain anyone (shroud/hexproof doesn't matter with the wording I used.. if I worded it right). If she's the only person around, she can act without waiting for word from "up high".

Thanks,
Jazaray

fluffycow:

When ~ deals damage to you player, that player exiles that many permanents.

Elspeth: Why are you so fat?
Fluffycow: Why are you dinner?

Aetherstorm

Judgement will come shortly. Letting you guys know ahead of time that I feel sorry for a few people with invalid entries. I made the rules as clear as I could and appreciate the efforts made. However, in this round, one invalid entry most likely means that you aren't making the cut to the final 3.

iplaneswalk:
So you never changed your entry and it's invalid. You get points for card 6 but anything multiplied by 0 is 0.

Coolcat3000:
Your cycle is pretty neat, but your card 6 is invalid with the wrong username. So while you would get points, it's not enough to be a contender for the final round. Thank you for trying though!

Aetherstorm:
I feel bad for this one. You've done a great job in making a cycle and a personal card, but the cycle doesn't meet criteria. The criteria states that they must be the same card type. I was really torn on this decision, but I had to stick to my own rules of the 'nit-picky' round and invalidate your entry. I'm sorry man.

---
Fluffycow:

This is a neat take on your cycle. I like that they are pseudo-miracles, although practically impossible to pull off (how many times in a 60 card deck do you cast all 4 of the same card?).
One error I am noticing is that the clause of exile isn't perfectly clear. It should read:
If there are four cards named ~ in exile, you may pay RR. If you do, shuffle four cards named ~ from exile into your library, and ~ deals 10 damage to target creature or player. Damage can't be prevented this turn. Players can't gain life this turn. This effect can only be done as a sorcery.
This would remove issues such as: Do I pay RR for each card? Can I pay RR multiple times for each card in exile to get multiple effects? What if I use alchemist refuge to cast spells at instant speed?

Once upon a time: Neat. Simple card draw with a bonus.
7.5/10

Once upon a war: I think this card is too powerful. Being able to reduce someone's life total to 10 seems more of a black card (Sorin) than red. The versatility to also hit a creature seems too much. One or the other would balance it out better.
6.5/10

Once upon a life: Simple effect, but you forgot one word. "... onto the battlefield. Then, if an opponent..."
6.5/10

Once upon a hope: Again a simple effect. I think it also could of prevented damage to you. Also, wording; "... untap that creature and it gains lifelink...". Personally, I think that the two enchantments could of been more, but that's something else entirely.
6.5/10

Once upon a grave: I like this one. Discard with a boost. Simple and effective. The miracle effect is really strong, and my suggestion to wording may have nerfed this card.
7.5/10

34.5/50

multiplier, fluffycow, the fat:
I enjoyed this read. I like your description provided as well, and how the card itself plays out. I like the synergy within the card, and how it doesn't die if you cannot feed it. Interesting and entertaining. Only issue is that twice you didn't use the letter 's' when you should of (all other permanent, ~ get +1/+1)

Jazaray:
This cycle is great. It's simple, great for drafts, some are playable outside of that. I'm just going to comment on a few things for the whole cycle. The big thing is the use of " -or- ". It should simply be a semi-colon. Second to that, is the red card. I think that it should only hit a creature or a player, but not both. Either one still makes it pretty damn good. Outside of these two things, it's great. The cards are fitting, the colors are within the color pie for effects, No grammatical/wording errors (that I can see, besides that mentioned), Consistent across the board. Great job. 8.5/10 across the board, except for the red which is 7.5/10 (Originally this was 8's and 7's, but the flavor text was also very fitting and I felt should of been rewarded)

This is also a really good entry. personally, I wanted to see Jazaray, MOTL's Mom for a card name, but this is very fitting. A minor spelling error "... enters the battlefield, choose a creature..." But everything is great! Vigilance: Check. Trample: Check. Reach: Check. These are very fitting. Is first strike? nope. Can't strike until they do something bad. Just a great job.

Junichi:

So this cycle wasn't bad, but I did notice some inconsistency's. I'll go through them.

Memory Sprite: Just a little bit powerful for an uncommon. I get the faerie has flying part, and the counters spells part. But at an uncommon, being (IMO) better than spellstutter sprite is a bit much. This should of been a rare, or a 0/1 flyer. Or a merfolk would of been slightly better as a 1/1 flash sans flying.
7/10

Natural Predator: I like the pseudo-plow under effect. Hasn't been done in awhile and I like the body attatched to it. Not too powerful but not bad either.
8/10

Grinning Fiend: I like this as well. Not quite a discard, not quite a time walk. But does slow your opponent down a little, which is great for black. New approach to discard, but discard nonetheless. One inconsistency pops up here (although it makes sense, branches away from the other cards in the cycle): Target opponent. 3 of 5 cards are generic. This is one of two that are dispositioned towards a particular player. More in the next card.
7/10

Excavation Maniac: This is the other inconsistency. This only affects yourself. You should be able to target any spell in any player's graveyard to remain consistent with the rest of the cycle.
7/10

Righteous Paladin: This I feel, while good, doesn't quite fit the color pie. Bouncing creatures is primarily a blue effect, and not in white. It remains consistent with your cycle, but stands out from the color pie.

Multiplier: Junichi, Servant of Leshrac
This is kinda neat. As a moderator, and a servant of the most powerful being on motl, it seems fitting. At first, I didn't agree with flying. But then I read Demon. What kinda demon would you be without flying? So that fits. I like the cumulative upkeep effect, and how it stays in line with MOTL rules. However, Karma works both ways. While I have never actually heard of someone being rewarded for good karma on this site, I have read that people can be. Aside from that, I think that this card could of been a 3/3 and still been balanced from the legendary status. Nice flavor text though

ChargingRhinos: This is neat! I wasn't expecting a shield over the sword variant. One issue with the cycle though: The shields should of cost 3 to play. While they are not the swords, some of these effects are very powerful and I feel that it should of remained consistent with the swords for CMC. With that said:

Shield of Rime and Religion: This is fitting. Freeze a creature, +1/+1 to a creature. I think that the equipped creature should of gotten the +1/+1 counter though, not any creature. Or, a 'religion' counter added to the shield that give the equipped creature +1/+1 for each counter.
7.5/10

Shield of Amnesia and Apathy: Neat effects. Discard and mill when blocking, and can target different people. Could be used for a self-mill for say, dredge.
8/10

Shield of Parasites and Prediction: I'm liking this cycle! It's making me reconsider attacking you. Abilities are fitting and not too powerful.
8/10

Shield of Turbulence and Tranquility: An error in wording here. Instead of 'you deal 2 damage' it should read '~ deals 2 damage'. I thought about the destroy target enchantment, and while I hummed and hawed at it for awhile, I couldn't actually find something wrong with green destroying enchantments. It just seems kinda 'meh' in comparison to the other abilities.
6/10

Shield of Cornucopia and Curing: I like this one. Simple but effective, and can be easily abused with the 2 lands. Glad it's not all lands, as that's kind of a rip. Also, I think the 2 lands part could of been a 'plow under'-ish effect by bouncing a land to target players hand. But that doesn't affect your score, just alternatives that I thought of.

Chargingrhinos
Can't be blocked by two or more creatures: Fitting.
When it attacks, gets +2/+0: Yep. I can see that.
Trample? You damn right!
6/6: wait, a 6/6 with all of the above at uncommon? That's a bit much. I had to check through gatherer for this kinda criteria to double-check and yep. It's a bit much. I considered the mana cost at triple green, but I still think it's a bit much total. Overall though, nice card.

KGthelegend

Planeswalker charms. Neat! I hadn't thought of this previously. I'm also enjoying 'multientwine'(say that 5 times fast) as a mechanic. Neat approach. The only things I'm wondering is if they may be too powerful at uncommon level, and why no flavor text?

Liliana's Charm: Slightly better murder, pseudo-board wipe, and sign in blood. Might be a bit much all things considered. Although this is mana intensive to use more than one ability, the abilities are kinda stacked.
7/10

Chandra's Charm: pyroclasm, trumpet blast, pseudo-shatterstorm. This can see some serious play in multiple formats. overall though, I don't think it's too broken. It's still conditional to the battlefield.
8/10

Garruk's Charm: aerial predation, mini-overrun, and call of the herd. I think this one is balanced very nicely and has some great effects.
8.5/10

Ajani's Charm: Paraselene and riot control. Not sure what the other ability is called. I think to fit ajani, it should of been: +1/+1 counter and vigilance.
7.5/10

Jace's Charm: Counterspell, mizzium skin, careful study. All of these effects seem fitting. I'm slightly concerned over instant speed careful study, but at 3 mana seems balanced.

Multiplier: KGtheLegend, Death Incarnate

8 mana for a 6/6 flying deathtouch pro:white. Alright. He better be legendary. Oh, he is? Okay, that's cool. What else does he do? Ah, there's the nod to krovikan vampire. That's fitting and not too broken. And death incarnate: He can come back from the graveyard.
Actually, this isn't bad. It's not great, but it's not bad. Mainly though, it fits critera. With the return effect, you should of stated 'your' graveyard instead of 'the' graveyard.
