Right now, it's The Black Book of Communism: Crimes, Terror, Repression by Stephane Courtois, Jean-Louis Panne, Andrzei Paczkowski, Nicholas Werth, Jean-Louis Margolin, and Karol Bartosek.

This is the history of the book, and what it's all about:
Already famous throughout Europe, this international bestseller plumbs recently opened archives in the former Soviet bloc to reveal the actual, practical accomplishments of Communism around the world: terror, torture, famine, mass deportations, and massacres. Astonishing in the sheer detail it amasses, the book is the first comprehensive attempt to catalogue and analyze the crimes of Communism over seventy years.
"Revolutions, like trees, must be judged by their fruit," Ignazio Silone wrote, and this is the standard the authors apply to the Communist experience--in the China of "the Great Helmsman," Kim Il Sung's Korea, Vietnam under "Uncle Ho" and Cuba under Castro, Ethiopia under Mengistu, Angola under Neto, and Afghanistan under Najibullah. The authors, all distinguished scholars based in Europe, document Communist crimes against humanity, but also crimes against national and universal culture, from Stalin's destruction of hundreds of churches in Moscow to Ceausescu's leveling of the historic heart of Bucharest to the widescale devastation visited on Chinese culture by Mao's Red Guards.

As the death toll mounts--as many as 25 million in the former Soviet Union, 65 million in China, 1.7 million in Cambodia, and on and on--the authors systematically show how and why, wherever the millenarian ideology of Communism was established, it quickly led to crime, terror, and repression. An extraordinary accounting, this book amply documents the unparalleled position and significance of Communism in the hierarchy of violence that is the history of the twentieth century.

I need to start reading more Heinlein. He's kind of slipped back in my list. Is that one good?

You know, I've never understood why people liked reading that book (Atlas Shrugged). I forced myself to read it all the way through and it felt like reading some immensely long diatribe of propaganda filled with such obviously wrong logic espoused by the main characters.

Seriously, what's the jest of reading a book on your iPod? I mean, I've tried reading the Hitchhiker's Guide that way, but it's so obvious you're just trying to look handsome peering at your expensive player and all that. And the fonttype is extremely small and not very pleasant to read Doesn't beat the real thing!

Mutants, by Gordon R. Dickson.

I've already read a lot of the stories in it, but I enjoy re-reading them.

What if it were hot girls reading to you? I could start a new chain of books on tape/cd. I think that I might become rich. (Insert the little copyright symbol here)

Let's see...I'm currently in the middle of:

the newest Tom Clancy paperback
The Salmon of Doubt by Douglas Adams
the latest Dune novel
the latest Terry Brooks book.

I really need to just keep one book with me, rather than finding I need a book, then grabbing whatever's closest. Maybe I could at least remember titles, then!

Depite the criticism the book is getting from some members, I say you couldn't have picked a better book! (though as an audio version I'm not so sure if it carries quite the same weight, but maybe I'm just old fashioned that way... ya know... reading and all, from a book... )

Anyways, I will admit that the book is a sort of "propaganda", but in reality it's more of a philosophical treatise. And it's not hidden or anything, the book is supposed to be like that. If you've ever read any of Ayn Rand's articles on Objectivism she's constantly quoting from her own books. Though they are fiction they're not meant as a light, pleasure read. It's supposed to at least open your mind. I don't care if people disagree, just don't bash something you don't understand or like. I think the logic is very convincing actually.

Ohh, and go capitalism! Heh...

As for myself, I'm currently trying to get through War and Peace. Talk about a heavy read. It's not necessarily bad, it's just very slow and tedious reading (at least up to page 120 where I'm at now). I hope it picks up though because I want to enjoy it...

One book would be enough. You could have one girl read one book, and then sell it off as any book, because everyone's either too busy trying to jerk off in the metro with their pants on or are simply mesmerised by the sexy voice that they actually miss their stop, nevermind pay attention to what they're actually saying.

I learned the hard way, do NOT read the abridged version. I was in high school, and didn't know better, but the abridged version confused a lot of things because they changed names, so 2 characters would share a name for some reason. It was horrible. Some day I'll get around to reading it the right way, though.

finished YuYu Hakusho vol 1 & 2 (manga's) and i'm almost finished with Brian Clevinger's Nuklear Age.

when i'm done with that, i'm thinking about re-reading Richard Russo's Straight Man... or possibly continuing with my Tarzan series.

Lucky me then, I didn't know any better but the copy I bought (which was over a year ago now) is "complete and unabridged" and cited as the only translation that had Tolstoy's approval.
