Well, Pod can't really beat Solar Flare from my experience... So I would play Flare.

Get me a list of all of the commons you need, and I'll see what I can do. I really need to make a push to get rid of a few thousand extra cards. I should start bulking off a bunch of un/commons at some point in the near future if I can find time to sort them out.

Why does the "Decks of the Week" feature on mtg.com bother listing Momir Basic decklists?

There is such a thing as an optimal Momir Vig list, strangely enough. There's a strategy to the format too. I'm not totally sure what it is, though.

Certain activation costs are weighted in one color or another, so you want to make sure you have the appropriate color requirements for them.

You'd be surprised how many people fail at using onboard tricks. Or forget to attack with creatures with shadow/fear/intimidate/flying/horsemanship. Or forget how banding and other older keywords work.

I cannot remember because I'm not in front of MODO right now, but in Momir Basic you want to have mostly all mountains and swamps. The reason is those two have the most creatures with 'firebreathing' creature effects. Forests is third most and you want to have the least plains and islands. Plains have the worst activations and Islands let other mobs Islandwalk you (and there are a ton of those).

Some things for basic strategy:

-You always want to be on the draw, because you dont have to skip a drop to get to your 8 drops on-time.
-Skip your one drop.
-Never play an island out unless you absolutely HAVE to. The time you forget this is the time they flip an islandwalker you can't block.
-If you are on the play, you want to skip your three drop. Reason being the two drops have the better utility creatures (and the best creature in the format, Azorius Guildmage).
-You always want to get to 8 drops because they are the strongest overall creatures.
-Stay away from 7 drops. One word = PHAGE, Instant loss, and yes it will happen if you play enough. Leveler also sucks but luckily he's a 5 drop. Plus 8 drops are stronger anyways.
-If you are ahead in the game, skip an 8 drop and play your 9th land, because ALL 9 DROPS ARE CURRENTLY SAFE, and by SAFE I mean you won't instantly lose (yeah Leviathan still sucks but Kuro, Pitlord is AMAZING). The 8 drop category has Denizen of the Deep which pretty much is an instant loss. You will lose to that at one point.
-If you have extra land (due to a mana dork) somehow, I would recommend the 11 drops. 4/6 of them are really good.

Optimal Sequence of Turns (on play)
7 cards, draw one for 8 cards
land - 7 cards
draw land play 2 drop - 6 cards
draw land play 3 drop - 5 cards
draw land play 4 drop - 4 cards
draw land play 5 drop - 3 cards
draw land play 6 drop - 2 cards
draw land play 7 drop - 1 card
draw land play 8 drop - 0 cards
draw play 8 drop

After RoE the 9+ drops are a lot more attractive. Annihilator is often GG.

Also, it is worth it to have some islands in case you get an amazing blue activated ability. There are a lot of swampwalkers too, really.

Fair, I did not know that. I don't think I played much Momir since pre-RoE.

I realize that you want to have Islands and Plains in your deck, but they are the least ones you want out of the others.

I am at home and this was the deck I 'used to use':

15 mountains
15 swamps
15 forests
10 islands
5 plains

How do either Flare or Pod decks do against swarm decks like Township Tokens, Tempered Steel, or Mono Red?

The Heartless/Glissa/Myr Pod deck crushes swarm decks, but can't beat control. Not sure about the Flare matchup.

I would also advise against pod right now. I must have tested about 10 different lists while prepping for states and could never find something that I was happy with or that had a good chance against the top decks. You get stuck running some awkward creatures just so you can get pod chains going and it really lacks card selection to help find the pods. Most of our lists were just too slow or the land base was just a mess.

I've been much happier with the performance of the UWb control/flarish deck I switched over to and have been running for the past week.

Do I have a case for BTA?

I tried with someone on Sept 30th.

I simulsent. He received.

I have yet to receive.

I look at his list and he still has the cards in his Haves that were agreed upon in our trade, and edited his list a couple days ago. Not to mention, people still offering for said cards....

Allow 2 weeks for domestic mail before you can BTA someone. 1 more day, I think? Not really sure when the timer actually starts, I'd wait until the weekend though just to make sure -.-

I assume you've tried to contact him and he hasn't responded.

Yes. I understand the reasoning for the 2 weeks, I do.
I just am a little taken aback by the cards still being on his list, him entertaining offers for said cards, and editing his list, all within the past 3 days (when out deal was in Sept.) Seems fishy to me.

In light of recent tournament finishes, I'd say there's a strong case for dropping both and running Wolf Run Green. It's got the pluses of valakut (namely, having a land be the wincon, which is hella hard to interact with) with none of the negatives (ie the mana ramp isn't pulling you in two different directions). If you'd rather not acquire the cards though I say solar flare, cause nobody can put together a Pod list worth anything yet (despite Ruinator being practically made for that deck).

if you wanna donate to a cause, I'm teaching my Girlfriend's sister to play, and in turn she teaches her firedns to play too, so I f you have Extra playable commons, uncommons in any colors from the core sets, basically M10, M11 or M12 I can get'em off your hands. =)

The LGS here doesn't really have many core set cards. =/

Yeah, it does. Basically, I'd email him again and post him on the BTA if the cards don't come in with Saturday's mail and you hadn't gotten an adequate response from him.

I was just accused of netdecking a deck that nobody else plays and of which I am the original creator. Gotta love MWS. EDIT: Just wanted to point out that his ultra-rogue deck choice was MUC. =/

By the by, thanks for the offers, JoshSherman and nderdog. I will gladly take you up on them (well, in exchange for at least some things you want) once I get my act together and figure out which commons I still need. I've been able to acquire most of 'em, it's just been an inordinately long process. Doubtless partly because most MOTLers don't list their commons.
