This new set is shaping up to be a disappointment.

Why is that?

Of course, it needs a new really good Mill card, but other than that, what's wrong (so far)?

- White Zombies
- Flavourful mechanics
- BigBadBolas is Back
- I like the gods and how they work.

I'm going to the prerelease for sure. See if I can beat up the young folk again and take the cake

Really??? Where is Nicol Bolas??!! They've been teasing him for a while now and even put a worthless card in Aether Revolt, but still no Bolas. It should've been reveal #1!

he's there, somewhere! that's enough for me. The fact that he's lurking on the background somewhere pulling his usual strings is a great though. I'm sure he'll make his appearance in this or Amonkhet 2.
And, if I were Wizards, I would build up the tension by NOT revealing him as the first (as the rest could only be worse of course), but give teasers first.

EDIT: Oh, and I miss Ankh, gotta include Ankh of Mishra!
That being said, I miss Dominaria and Urza and 'glistening oil' and Serra and.. oh well

I believe in MaRo's article this week they said this was the "more Egyptian" themed set and the small set was the more "Bolas themed". I'm now expecting Bolas in the small set.

I think that would make sense. I have fallen out of touch with the story stuff (I'm assuming that's started now), but there's nothing overt about Bolas being shown in the cards spoiled so far. Yes, his horns are seen all over the place...but there's mainly references to the "god-pharaoh" throughout the flavor text. I'm going to guess he doesn't appear in the story line until later on, and the second set in the block will focus more on the fight with him.

Now that the full spoiler is out what's everybody's take?

I see some interesting cards here that I'm going to pick up, but no more/less than the average amount for a new set.

At first glance I like this set less than Kaladesh, a little less than SOI, and more than BFZ.

Only 2 cards I'm in love with:

As Foretold
Harsh Mentor

Especially the Mentor.... He's gonna be played in Eternal formats for sure.

This is one of the most mediocre sets I've ever seen. Maybe as bleh as Dragon's Maze, almost as blehch as Forgotten Empires. (As a commander only player for constructed decks, and sometimes cube. rarely booster limited events.)

Angel of Sanctions looks great, but its not the right wording, and a 3/4 doesn't last long in Commander, Embalm is cute - but self-exiling my stuff is not how I like to play.

Anointed Procession, this looks cute - and would give me an excuse to jam a Elspeth or two into my Radiant deck. But its just another piece of bull**** for tokens-producer-decks like Ghave and Marath(? the naya token one..)

Cast Out is interesting, flash is nice, cycling is nice - but Sun Titan can't get it back like it can O-Stone and Banish.

Protection of the Hekma is fine in a pillow-fort deck, just run it along side Urza's Armor and it might kind of amusing actually. I may have to put my monowhite prison/fort deck back together actually...

Sparring Mummy - more combo Jiki-Twin.....bleh. And it is a 3/3 which can be important.

Vizier of Deferment still just Banishing Light with Flash. But with a situational trigger.

So...nothing from white that I want - except for Procession, and that's a big, big if.

Vizier of Many Faces is just a clone, with Embalm. Nothing exciting there.

Commit//Memory is just more "meh".

Not a single blue card in this set that is interesting...

Archfiend of Ifnir looks interesting, if you can build around it with cycling and discard effects, it's a strong one-sided wrath with legs. Also, that art is amazing.

Never//Return is ... a solid 3 mana planeswalker removal spell, but its' only Sorcery ... and the Return part is about as medicore as it could be without being straight up irrelevant.

By Force is fine red artifact-hate, but still not as good as Vandalblast.

Combat Celebrant is a 3 mana second combat trick stick with summoning sickness. Not much about it, not playable other than in 40 and 60 card formats.

Glorious End - Well....Sundial of the Infinite and this are a .. "combo."

Warfire Javelineer might be a decent FTK, but again it depends on your graveyard being full of specific card types.

Nothing exciting in red, moving on.

Quarry Hauler kills planeswalkers, with green. Enough for me to try it...somewhere...?

Sandwurm Convergence. Wurms? Yes. On endstep? Yes.

Shefet Monitor isn't a creature, it's an instant that reads "draw a card and get a land into play for four mana." I'd rather have "get two lands," in a four mana sorcery.

Vizier of the Menagerie is definitively playable. Easy four mana, easy splash, lets you use any mana color to play creatures. 10/10 will jam in many decks.

One green card, maybe two.....except for Vizier of the Zoo, nothing to exciting.

Bounty of the Luxa .... draw 0.5 cards, or ramp 1.5 mana. On a four mana enchantment? No thanks.

Nissa, Steward of Elements's middle ability is the only thing that interests me. And only because of putting more lands into play is my motto.

Samut, Voice of Dissent is something I think will be very good in Hazezon. Flash being the key reason.

Two decent multicolor cards, one for ramp, one for aggro.

Edifice of Authority, more pillow fort!

Oracle’s Vault, I really hate cards that give people ways to cheat big things into play. I hate that part of magic. Full retail or bust.

There's one card for sure I'd want to get...if I remade my pillowfort/prison deck. Artifacts are meh'er then meh.

Cascading Cataracts is cute. AND it is indestructible. And I might play it in a Grixis deck that's 100% multicolor cards.

Cycling duals - Does it have forest or plains subtype? Playable. If not, then no.

Overall, I rate this set a 2/7

I need multiple copies of Vizier (stupid mythic)...otherwise, there are maybe a handful of cards I might try in decks.

The UG Nissa would fit well in my Intet deck (as would Vizier).

Might get the new Liliana for Gisa and Geralf zombie tribal, if her price dips low enough.

I'll need to at least have a copy of Anointed Procession, since it's a solid effect to have when I do jam tokens decks.

The cycling duals will be good pickups because of the basic land types. I hope Wizards keeps making fetchable duals.

In other news - Wizards says the COM2017 decks will be out in August this year. There will only be four of them and they will be tribal themed.

So, Elves, Zombies, Goblins, Merfolk? I feel like Merfolk is the swing slot...especially since they have not been showing up as much in sets. Maybe they would go with wizards instead. Goblins are probably iffy as well. I think it's safe to assume that zombies and elves are a sure thing though.

Heh!

Wizard's Tower in Ottawa sold me 4x Commander 2016 UWRG (dunno the name of the actual deck) for 96$ CDN taxes in, and bought everything minus the following for 107$ lol

4x Propaganda
4x Ghostly Prison
4x Swords to Plowshares
4x Howling Mine
4x Venser's Journal
4x Selfless Squire
4x Chasm Skulker
4x Oath of Druids
4x Beast Within
2x Arcane Denial
4x Homeward Path
4x Sphere of Safety
4x Benefactor's Draught
2x Temple Bell
1x Rites of Flourishing
4x Forbidden Orchard

I hope they give me more free stuff in the near future lol

I agree that Elves & Zombie are a given, and I think one of the other two will be Slivers. No idea what the 4th could be. Goblins & Merfolk are possible, but it could also be Werewolves, Angels, Dragons, or Allies.

Upon further reflection, I could see dragons easily making the list over something like goblins. It's a super popular creature type.

Angels would be cool, but I think it would need to have something like soldiers as a supporting type.

It's also interesting that there is no color-wheel basis...so we could easily see new legends that are 2-5 colors. I wouldn't complain if they continued to explore the partner design space as well.

As long as its' not Slivers.

Merefolk might be an option on the table though. Allies too....sadly that might make me puke.

I would think at least Goblins and Zombies...Elves would make sense except that the green commander deck a couple years ago was half Elves / half Beasts tribal if I remember right, but probably will get one of those... Soldiers or Humans seems likely. Merfolk could be a possibility but maybe a little less to chose from there? Kind of doubt angels or dragons since they don't have as much variance in converted mana cost and less token makers

Dragons are easily in the top five of mtg creature types, in terms of popularity.

Based on MaRo's articles and podcasts, dragons have consistently been the #1 creature type for the entire history of magic
