Can a chimeric idol (after it is activated) be killed by tsabo's decree? If yes, what creature type should be named?

i've got some questions regarding meddling mage:

can i play a Meddling Mage and name counterspell to prevent it from being countered by that card?
Same question for any other card which is cast in response: For example if i play meddling maga and name "Urza's Rage" or "Shock" can the oponent play those cards in response?
Can i play Meddling mage and name meddling mage?

When Meddling mage leaves play can the named card be played again or are the effects permanent?

K.5.Ruling.3 - When a permanent is changed into a creature, it does not have
a creature type at all unless the spell or ability specifies one. For
example, the Forests animated by Living Lands have no creature type.
[WotC Rules Team 97/06/01]

This means that you cannot tsabo's decree a chimeric idol.

As to meddling mage, abeyance, eureka/recycle, etc, blah blah blah here's how it works.

First of all

1)G.28 - Put Into Play
G.28.1 - A spell or ability may instruct you to put a card into play. This
is not considered to be "playing" or "casting" that card for any reason.
You do not pay any costs which are paid when playing the card.
[D'Angelo 98/02/03]

So no on the eureka recycle bit.
For yet one more rules bit for those who don't believe me.
Eureka:
Info: Color=Green Type=Sorcery Cost=2GG LG(R1)
Text(LG+errata): Each player may put an artifact, creature, enchantment, or
land card from his or her hand into play. Players take turns playing
cards from their hands until no one wants to put another card into play.
If a spell has an X in its casting cost, X is 0. [Oracle 99/09/03]
The cards put into play during Eureka enter play one at a time. This means
that if two of the same Legend are put into play as the result of this
spell that the second one is buried, not both of them. [Aahz 94/06/22]
The cards are put into play and will not trigger effects which trigger on
such cards being "played". [D'Angelo 00/04/09]

Here is the rule about cards being "played" as opposed to a card actually resolving.

T.3 - Life Cycle of Spells and Abilities
T.3.1 - The life cycle for a spell or ability can be charted out like this:
[CompRules 99/04/23]
1. Announcement -- Costs are paid. Targets are chosen. Mode is chosen.
See Rule T.4.2 for details.
2. Waiting for resolution -- When a spell or ability gets to this stage,
it is considered successfully "played" or "activated".
It is put on top of the stack, and can be responded to by putting
other spells and abilities on the stack. Stay in this step until both
players pass while there are no spells or abilities above this one in
the stack.

This means that any announced and paid for spell is considered played. The skirge would die, in the one case, as the creature was announced and paid for, fulfilling the "played" requirement. By the same token, abeyance cannot be used to counter a creature/artifact spell because by the time you get a chance to respond with they abeyance the spell has already been "played."

As to the continuous effect of Meddling Mage.

T.8.5 - A continuous effect generated by a static ability of a permanent
is in effect as long as the permanent is in play, and ends as soon as the
permanent leaves play. [CompRules 99/04/23]

Hope that clears up some confusion. I'll try to get around to answering any unanswered questions later, but I've got work to do atm.

Reinhart - You would have to play the eye after the damage has been dealt. As life is a state-based effect you would already be dead.
"This spell is played after damage is dealt to you, so if you lost due to the original damage, you cannot use this spell to get in a final shot at your opponent. [D'Angelo 00/02/25]"
For the wall question, I can find no errata that would apply.

Blackmage - Yes

Maximus Ar - Sorry, I got that one wrong, you don't draw the cards as you are not playing the spell.

British Kavu - If I was running the tournament you would be shot. Just write a goddamn number!

Goaswerfraiejen - No

Spike101 - The second cradle is put into the graveyard before it even comes into play.

diablo312 - No

Avatar of Might - you name the card as the mage comes into play, not while its on the stack, so it can be countered.
If you name a shock, rage, whatever, it cannot be killed by them in response.
Yes, you can name meddling mage to prevent other copies being played.
Like all continouous effects, it only applys whilst the mage is in play.

guenhwyvar: I thank you for your continuing contribution to this link..

pandemonium: pls refrain from posting answers.. I have specific requirements on help with answering.. a main one is getting the answer correct.. the other main one is to be able to back up your decisions..
I've seen a lot of wack answers thus far..

mainly the one to Spike101- the second cradle is put into the graveyard before it even comes into play.

HUH?? WHAT?? like I said.. main requirement is to get stuff right.. I can understand mistakes which caquaa and guenhwyvar have made.. but they do get most right.. and have done as I've requested along the lines of providing explanations and citations out of D'Angelo's or FAQ's

that was just an example of the outrageous stuff that was on the current page.. if I went thru the other stuff u've answered.. I'm sure I can find other out of wack answers..
again.. pls refrain from giving answers

After this wk I'll be once again picking up on the answering (schedule is picked up so I'm fine now..)

Coolio - I did mail you to ask if it was alright to post answere, and could have provided evidence to back up what I was saying. I am sorry if I have overstepped the mark here but I was just trying to help out. The cradle thing was just a short way of saying that as a state-based effect, the legend rule kicks in before it can be tapped for mana.
I apologise once again.

ok i have a question.. it may have been asked i don't have the time to go through every page but here goes.. (sorry if it sounds stupid)

with the new planeshift familiars ie. the black one(cuz i can't remember the name right now) .. it reduces the cost by 1.. well if i have 4 in play it reduces by 4.. so what I'm asking is say i play ghitu fire which is RX... x doesn't have to be red it could be purple, but it's still part of the casting cost. so would it automatically do 4?

sorry if the question seems stupid..

Okay here is a type 1 question from me .

If i have a Necropotence and a chains of mephistopheles in play.

Do I have to discard?

Another Necro question - somebody told me recently that Necropotence had been errata'd so that if you over-Necroed you wouldn't have to discard down to 7 until the following turn. That seems to good to be true and doesn't appear to be supported by the Oracle link at the start of this post. Just looking for backup here.

ok here's a question.. for a deck I'm working on.. If i cast Twilights Call and i have no creatures in play how would this affect gating creatures? could i bring them back into play since all creatures are coming back at the same time?

gzeiger

ForSquirrel - The gating effect happens after they come into play, not before. You can play a gating creature when you have no other creatures in play, but you will have to return the gating creature itself to your hand.

If you Twilight's Call a bunch of creatures, some of them gating, then they will all come into play and you will then have to pick up the appropriate creatures to satisfy the gating requirement.

gzeiger thanx for the info.. but how bout this.. say i twilight's call the creatures.. if i understand you right.. lets say i have rav rats in my graveyard and they comeback.. do they still have their "come into play" effect if i return them to my hand?

ForSquirel: K.27.Ruling.1 - The value of 'X' is chosen when announcing the spell (before
you pay the mana cost) and you cannot change this value later.

So yes, the cost would be reduced by 4.

sfdj:
The acquired cards are not considered draws. They will not cause damage
with Underworld Dreams or have Enduring Renewal detect creatures.
[D'Angelo 95/12/08]

Nope, don't have to discard for it.

gzeiger: There has been no recent errata on Necropotence, the old rule still stands near as I can find.

grem38: I already answered this question in the post about "playing" spells, but I'll say it again. A spell is considered played after announcement and when costs are paid. All of this occurs before the opponent has a chance to respond. So if I play a fact or fiction, you can't counterspell it because I've "played" a blue spell this turn already.

Reinhart: No.

T.8.2 - A continous effect generated by the resolution of a spell or ability
will "lock in" the set of permanents it will affect. If the spell or
ability is targeted, this is done at the time it is announced. If the
spell or ability is not targeted, this is done when it resolves.
[CompRules 99/04/23] For example, a spell that reads "All white creatures
get +1/+1 until end of turn" gives the bonus to all permanents that are
white creatures when the spell resolves. These permanents keep the bonus
if they stop being white or stop being creatures, and permanents that become white creatures later in the turn do not get the bonus.

Forsquirel: Gzeiger got the gating question right. Gating occurs after the creature has come into play, by which time all your creatures will be returned from the graveyard.

Damn, never thought I would have to post here as I know the rules (at least in my opinion) pretty well. Anywayz...

For once I read the card as printed-Rebel Informer.

Put target Rebel CARD on the bottom of it's owners library.

My ? is can you target rebels in your opponents library? If it said "REBEL" then I would know you couldn't-it wouldn't be a creature, just a creature card; but it says "REBEL CARD" then I'm assuming you can target rebels in your own graveyard, library, opponent's graveyard, opponent's library...

If so, it's alot better than I had thought, making an opponent never see another rebel is mean. But then I just thought, if you searched your deck (don't see why but hey, you can do it...err I think) or opponent's deck, would you have to shuffle? It certainly doesn't say so. Or I'm I wasting my time asking about something that has been errated? LMK

When he started doing it, I asked him it that was legal, and he said yea. Then our resident rules guru said that was legal. But I thought as soon as you remove the last counter, the needles die. Ziggman: No, you cannot counter creatures coming back with parallax wave. They are not being cast, they are merely coming into play.

GottaLoveElves:
Underworld Dreams:
Info: Color=Black Type=Enchantment Cost=BBB LG(U1)
Text(LG+errata): Whenever an opponent draws a card, ~this~ deals 1 damage to
him or her. [Oracle 99/09/03]

Underworld dreams does not target the opponent, so they woudl take damage. Also, In a multi-player game, it affects all opponents. [D'Angelo 00/03/03]

Imagenyuss: Hmmm...I don't THINK you can conspiracy for legendary walls. "Legend" is a creature type as is "wall." conspiracy says Text(MM): As ~this~ comes into play, choose a creature type. ; Creatures
you control and creature cards in your graveyard, hand, and library are of
the chosen type.
This would lead me to belive that you can't pick both, but I'll have to ask coolio to answer this one for sure. But everything else is right, walls can't attack and creatures made legends with conspiracy act as all other legends, following the rules thereof.

Fatman: The k-value is how many goodie points you get for showing up, winning, etc.

NukeMoose: You can't target the rebel if it isn't in play. Oh, but it would be soooo nice.

da-odd-templar: The conclusion I've come to is that you can not sacrifice a sandstone needle to pay the cost of the harrow. here's why:

T.4.10 - If a spell or ability has multiple costs to be paid on
announcement, the costs may be paid in any order you choose as long as you
pay them all. They are
not simultaneous. [CompRules 99/11/01]

This means that the needle will remove it's last counter and then sacrifice it to itself before you can pay the next cost.

Here's some more backup.

T.4.2 - Announcing a spell or ability can be charted out like this:
[CompRules 99/04/23] [WotC Rules Team 00/06/06]
a) Announce the spell or ability to be played and put it on the stack.
b) If the spell or ability is modal (see Rule G.24), choose the mode.
c) If the spell or ability has an {X} in the mana cost, the value for X
is chosen.
d) If the spell or ability has an alternate cost, choose whether or not
to use it.
e) If Buyback (see Rule A.9) or other optional cost is available, choose
if it will be paid.
f) Targets (if any) are chosen. See Rule G.39.
g) If targets are affected differently, choose how each target is
affected. This includes dividing up counters and damage.
h) Pay all costs. See Rule G.6. Make any choices for alternative costs
at this time.

T.4.5 - If the cost includes mana, mana abilities can be played at
substep 'f'. Or, you could have played the mana abilities before
announcing the spell or ability. [CompRules 99/04/23]

This means that mana costs are paid at f, and the land sacrifice is at h. Between that time, the needle finds it's way to the graveyard. Tough tough question....
