No, you cannot. Alternatives to mana costs are tied to the cost printed at the top right corner of the card. Giving a card flashback, even if it is equal to the mana cost, is an ability in the card's text box, meaning the alternative costs cannot apply. I'm going to go hunt in the rules for a better explanation. Will edit it in.

601.2b. If the spell is modal the player announces the mode choice (see rule 700.2). If the player wishes to splice any cards onto the spell (see rule 702.45), he or she reveals those cards in his or her hand. If the spell has alternative or additional costs that will be paid as it's being cast such as buyback, kicker, or convoke costs (see rules 117.8 and 117.9), the player announces his or her intentions to pay any or all of those costs (see rule 601.2e). A player can't apply two alternative methods of casting or two alternative costs to a single spell. If the spell has a variable cost that will be paid as it's being cast (such as an in its mana cost; see rule 107.3), the player announces the value of that variable. If a cost that will be paid as the spell is being cast includes hybrid mana symbols, the player announces the nonhybrid equivalent cost he or she intends to pay. If a cost that will be paid as the spell is being cast includes Phyrexian mana symbols, the player announces whether he or she intends to pay 2 life or the corresponding colored mana cost for each of those symbols. Previously made choices (such as choosing to cast a spell with flashback from a graveyard or choosing to cast a creature with morph face down) may restrict the player's options when making these choices.

At FNM,

If you know someone owns three physical copies of Huntmaster of the Fells and wanted to play four in their deck.

Since the blank Dark Ascension DFC cards can be used to represent flip cards as long as they are in hand or library and going by his personally assumption that having all four Huntmaster in play at once is unlikely (or he could just play to where he won't have four in play purposefully)

Could he play using four Dark Ascension flip cards (the ones that come in packs) clearly bubble marked to represent four Huntmaster of the Fells in his deck?

No even playing at FNM you can not do that. You must have one physical card for each checklist card at any sanction tournament.

When I play flips cards and use the checklists (I played Mayor in my GW Humans), when I played one, I showed everyone that I had all 4.

95% of them said "I believed you, no need to show me."

Let's say I have Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Karn, Silver Golem on the table, and animate one of my artifacts with Karn's ability. If I somehow off'd my animated artifact (sac, destroy, etc.) will it come back to the battlefield due to it having undying? And if so, would it have a +1/+1 counter on it even though its not a creature at that time?

Thanks in advance!

Can you Snapcaster Mage the Ancestral Vision and draw three cards without paying it's casting cost?

No
117.6. Some mana costs contain no mana symbols. This represents an unpayable cost.
An ability can also have an unpayable cost if its cost is based on the mana cost of an object with no mana cost. (...)

Yes

702.91a Undying is a triggered ability. "Undying" means "When this permanent is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, if it had no +1/+1 counters on it, return it to the battlefield under its owner's control with a +1/+1 counter on it."

Ok then, How does that work with a creature who has protection? Is there such a thing as lethal damage for a protection from black creature VS a black creature?

There is no difference (other than the blocker(s) won't die).

The key is that you have to assign lethal damage to all creatures in order to trample excess damage over to the player/planeswalker you are attacking, not deal lethal damage. The game does not look ahead to see if the damage will be prevented.

So if you have a black 5/5 with deathtouch and trample, and it is blocked by a 2/10 with protection from black, you can assign 1 point of damage to the blocker(lethal damage with deathtouch) and 4 points to the player. When the damage is dealt, the protection prevents the damage to the blocking creature so it does not die.

Thanks in advance... Layman explanations preferred.

Few questions:

1. Engulfing Slagwurm vs. Progenitus.... P blocks ES. What happens? ES's text does not target, so does P get destroyed even if it has Protection? (Or for any pro-green creature.) And if a creature blocks or is blocked by ES (but not destroyed for whatever reason), does it's controller still gain life?

2. Legendary Eldrazi vs. Leyline of the Void... It is my understanding for the Eldrazi that the word "instead" means they do NOT go into the graveyard and go into the library "instead". So, do the Eldrazi get exiled? I believe Leyline also says "instead", so I'm wondering which one wins that battle.

2b. On that same note, is it a legal move to Rise from the Grave, Animate Dead, etc… one of those shuffle-into-library guys? Again, the word "instead" makes me think it does not even touch the graveyard; hence, it would not be a legal target. But I could be wrong.

3. Life' Finale vs. Kozilek... So, I got Life's Finale'd and my opponent searched my library and did the text on LF. Kozilek and my other guys got destroyed. We were unsure whether the whole spell resolved simultaneously or whether each part resolved separately. That mattered a lot because we were unsure whether Kozilek's final ability brought back my whole graveyard BEFORE or AFTER my opponent put 3 creatures from my library into my graveyard. (We went with the former because we based it strictly on the text. Kozilek's ability resolved and then my graveyard had the 3 creatures my opponent chose, but we had no clue if that was even right.)

Progenitus is destroyed, protection prevents damage, enchanting/equipping, blocking, and targetting, none of which are done by Engulfing Slagwurm's ability. The life gain will happen even if the creature isn't destroyed, as long as the triggered ability isn't countered.

The Eldrazi ability is actually a triggered ability, not a replacement effect (there's actually no "instead" in the Eldrazi ability, the "When" is the clue that it's a trigger), so the only replacement effect in question is the Leyline of the Void, which will exile the Eldrazi. Since the Eldrazi never got put into a graveyard, nothing will be shuffled in.

Similar to the last scenario, this is possible, though it is difficult. There is a brief opportunity to reanimate an Eldrazi while it's in a graveyard with it's triggered ability on the stack, but the effect doing so must be instant speed.

I've actually had this exact situation come up. The triggered ability on Kozilek won't go on the stack until Life's Finale has finished resolving, so the end result is all creatures in the Kozilek's owner's graveyard will be shuffled in to his/her library, including any found with Life's Finale's search.

Ohh, ok... Thanks for clearing that up. I think I got the word "instead" from Darksteel Colossus and I just assumed the Eldrazi had that word also.

I re-read Kozilek and what you said makes complete sense.

So, then do Darksteel and Blightsteel get exiled via Leyline of the Void? And can they be reanimated like the Eldrazi?

"If Darksteel [Blightsteel] Colossus would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, reveal Darksteel [Blightsteel] Colossus and shuffle it into its owner's library instead."

And 2 more questions.

Turn to Frog makes the target lose indestructibility, right? (It was pretty humorous for my Darksteel to get a Gut Shot and die.) Also, if it does get Turn to Frog'd, does Darksteel Colossus still shuffle back into the library? (Same question to any dying effects: Undying, Persist, "Whenever this creature dies...", etc...)

If I recall correctly, the controller of the Colossus gets to decide which replacement effect to apply, they can choose to exile the Colossus or shuffle it into their library.

Turn to Frog on a Colossus will allow it to be destroyed and stay in the graveyard after it's destroyed. Indestructibility itself is a weird case in that it is neither an ability or a characteristic, it just is. However "<cardname> is indestructible" is an ability, as is the ability granting the shuffle into library replacement effect, so both will be removed by Turn to Frog

So let me get this straight.

A creature with indestructibility would not lose indestructibility.
A creature with (<creature> is indestructible) would lose this ability?

Pretty much. If I'm remembering this correctly, a Darksteel Colossus will not be indestructible after a Turn to Frog, that same colossus equipped with a Darksteel Plate would be.

Progenitus vs Phantasmal Image

I had my Progenitus out and my opponent casts Phantasmal Image. It knocked my progenitus out because of the legend rule, but I was wondering if it sidestepped the protection. The wording doesn't include target creature, but my creature was obviously targeted. How can you make a copy of something in play and not have targeted it??

Yep, this works just fine to get around protection. Protection prevents damage, enchanting/equipping, blocking, and targeting. Phantasmal Image/Phyrexian Metamorph/Clone/several others don't use the word target, so they don't target anything, so Protection doesn't stop them.

Lets assume "sac'n it to something to kill my sharpshooter" is goblin gombardment. First your sharpshooter's "deal 1 damage" ability is on the stack. when the opponents creature is sacrificed to the bombardment the bombardment's ability goes onto the stack, then the cost is paid. When the cost (sacrifice a creature) is paid, it would trigger the sharpshooter's untap ability. First thing to resolve would be the untap ability in this scenario.

Lord of extinction has a characteristic defining ability.

604.3. Some static abilities are characteristic-defining abilities. A characteristic-defining ability conveys information about an object’s characteristics that would normally be found elsewhere on that object (such as in its mana cost, type line, or power/toughness box). Characteristic-defining abilities function in all zones. They also function outside the game.
604.3a. A static ability is a characteristic-defining ability if it meets the following criteria: (1) It defines an object’s colors, subtypes, power, or toughness; (2) it is printed on the card it affects, it was granted to the token it affects by the effect that created the token, or it was acquired by the object it affects as the result of a copy effect or text-changing effect; (3) it does not directly affect the characteristics of any other objects; (4) it is not an ability that an object grants to itself; and (5) it does not set the values of such characteristics only if certain conditions are met.

no, it does not have any "up to X targets" phrasing so you must have all the targets. You cannot target the same card multiple times.

Not unless they would otherwise have the requisite power/toughness. If your life is two, then reveillark would work (provided it's shuffle into the deck effect doesn't resolve).

print out the rules from rules.wizards.com and show him why its not correct then. Its all about educating. Pretty sure the stars were considered 0s a looong while back, but can't really say for certain. Sometimes people just play cards incorrectly as well.
