Question is in reference to my modern infect deck. I run gitaxian probes. So my question is, in opening hand, should I probe immediately before casting anything?
Keep in mind I am playing infect. Regardless of what is in their hand my first turn play will probably be forest, G.elf. So my question is in this regard: Since I will see your turn 1 play regardless, wether it's dropping a land, casting a 1-drop, thoughtseize or the like: You were going to do that anyway. Just because I have seen your hand isn't going to change your strategy much. So I ask if I should wait for 1 turn, and cast gitaxian probe on turn 2. This way, I see your first turn play, and I see the card you have drawn for your turn. This of course is in reference to going first, and also in going second.

It's completely situational. Do you need a (land, creature, spell other than probe) that turn? If so you probably need to probe. Are you worried about being countered? If so you should probably probe. Are you worried about your t1 drop being killed? If so, play probe.

There's only one free counter that can be played t0/1 (Disrupting Shoal), so are you ok with them two for oneing themselves to keep your 1 drop off the table? Do you run Spell Pierce, and so can protect your plays?

I'd play it on t2 for the following reasons:
- you are uninterested in removal. If the other player has it your t1 drop dies regardless of you playing the probe.
- if the other guy is playing some kind of discard (thoughseize/duress) then you might want to play the probe on t2 especially if you do not want to draw something important that might be discarded
- on t2 you'll know another card your opponent drew on his t1 (or t2) and you can plan your play accordingly.

Some reasons to play it on t1 are:
- if the other player has some countermagic that might stop it (Spell Pierce?)
- if it is the only card that might be discarded by duress
